Teen activities

The teen year in Petawawa: ice, trails, and one big river day

The teen offer here is terrain and programme: an arena with a real season, trails in every direction, a mini-putt summer -- and the town's recreation programmes carrying the rest, by session, with the rafting day as the earned excursion.

The teen year, season by season

the Petawawa Civic Centre, 16 Civic Centre Road, is the town's indoor hub: the Town's own facilities page gives an arena with an 83.5-by-183.5-foot ice surface and spectator seating for 554, a 6,000-square-foot banquet hall seating 272, a fundraising lounge for 20, and a Rotary Room booked through the Petawawa Public Library, which shares the Civic Centre campus. Outside are ball diamonds, soccer fields and a mini-putt course the Town packages in summer (June to September on its party-package page); the arena floor carries floor hockey, vendor events, concerts and receptions from April to September, when the ice is out. Recreation office hours and every programme grid live with the Town.

Outdoors, the teen terrain is the town's own: the Terrace's trail network for bikes-on-foot days and winter skiing, the Emerald Necklace along the rapids, the Algonquin Trail through town (shared with permitted motorized users under its own rules), and the Ottawa shore at the Point in season. The summer programme layer is the Town's: its camp and programme guides on the surfaces reached run senior camps for ages 8-12 and a full ladder of younger camps from the Civic Centre and Petawawa Point beach days -- the teen end of that ladder, and every registration date, lives with the Town.

The forms of the outing

The arena season

Civic Centre ice and floor, by session

the Civic Centre in brief: 16 Civic Centre Road -- arena (554 seats), 6,000 sq ft hall (272), library on campus, mini-putt in summer; grids with the Town. Public skating runs in the Town's October-to-March package season; the floor season (April to September) carries floor hockey and events. League and lesson registrations live with the Town and the clubs.

The summer ground

Mini-putt, beach days, trail days

The Civic Centre's mini-putt runs in the Town's June-to-September package season, and the Town's summer programmes use Petawawa Point for beach days on the programme surfaces reached. The Terrace and the Point are the free-range half of the teen summer; the programmes are the organized half.

The earned excursion

Raft day in Whitewater Region

whitewater, named at its true seat: the Ottawa River's famous commercial rafting reach -- the Rocher Fendu rapids -- is down the river in Whitewater Region, and its two best-known resorts are seated there, not in Petawawa: OWL Rafting, 40 Owl Lane, Foresters Falls (soft-adventure and sport rafting on its surfaces), and Wilderness Tours, 1260 Grants Settlement Road, Foresters Falls (a 600-acre adventure resort on its listings). From Petawawa they are a day trip, computed on this guide's day-trips pages -- close enough for a raft day with a Petawawa bed, and never borrowed as Petawawa businesses. Petawawa's own white water is the Petawawa River itself: rapids in town at Centennial Park for viewing and fishing, and a river local paddlers run in season -- a locals' water, printed as such, with no commercial programme claimed for it here. Operators publish their own age and weight minimums -- OWL's surfaces give minimum weights by trip grade -- and those rules, read with the operator, govern. No teen is promised a raft seat by this guide.

The winter teen

Winter moves the offer without ending it: arena season at the Civic Centre, ungroomed skiing and snowshoeing at the Terrace, the library's teen programming on its calendar, and hall events through the season. No arena grid, ice time or programme session is frozen here; all live with the Town and the library.

What this page does not promise

No arcade, cinema or indoor climbing is documented in Petawawa on the surfaces reached, and none is claimed. Those forms live in Pembroke and Ottawa -- outings, named as destinations on this guide's day-trips pages, each at home.
