Weekend

A weekend in Raikot

Friday evening in the bazaar, Saturday for the gurudwara, the old city gate and the Bassian Kothi, Sunday for a slow morning and the road out - Raikot at an unhurried pace.

Friday: arrive, eat, settle

Get in by evening - buses from Ludhiana run all day, and the drive is about 45 minutes. Check into Sky Hotel in town, the simplest base, then walk the Kutba Bazaar as the shops light up and the evening crowd comes out. Dinner at a dhaba: Manpreet Vaishno Dhaba near Burj Hari Singh Wala or Raikot Vaishno Dhaba in town - dal makhani, tandoori roti, lassi, done.

Saturday: the gurudwara, the gate, the kothi

Early start at Gurudwara Sri Tahliana Sahib - the morning kirtan begins around 4am, and the complex is at its most peaceful before the day crowds. Spend an hour: the darbar hall, the historical gallery with the Noora Mahi and Ganga Sagar story, langar if it's being served. Then Kutba Gate and the bazaar circuit - Committee Bazaar for the bakery stop (Passi Bakery), Mahavir Jain Bazar for the kirana-store window-shopping, and Dana Mandi Road for the grain market.

Afternoon: drive the ~8 km out to Bassian for the Maharaja Duleep Singh Memorial Kothi - the 1849 night-before-exile story, INTACH restoration, and the quietest hour of your weekend. Back in town for the evening, try A-One Hotel & Restaurant on Barnala Road if you want a break from dhaba food.

Sunday: slow morning, then the road out

Sunday morning: one more gurudwara - Manji Sahib or Mata Bishan Kaur - then a long breakfast at Bohar Wala Green Dhaba on the Ahmedgarh road. If you have the day, the Malerkotla run (~30 km) pairs beautifully: the town whose nawab's line the Guru blessed, with its shahi buildings. Or head to Ludhiana for the Rose Garden and the War Museum before catching your bus or train home.

If you'd rather not rush

Drop the Bassian trip and do Raikot slow: a second morning in the bazaar, a long dhaba lunch, and an afternoon drive through the wheat and mustard fields with a camera. Malwa rewards the unhurried - the town doesn't have a checklist, so don't impose one on it.

Common questions

Is a weekend enough for Raikot?

More than enough for the town itself - the gurudwara, the gate and the bazaar fit in a day. The second day is for Bassian and a day trip to Malerkotla or Ludhiana.

Is Raikot a day trip or an overnight?

It works as a day trip from Ludhiana, but an overnight buys you the bazaar at evening pace and the early-morning kirtan at Tahliana Sahib - which is the town's best hour.

Are there events on in Raikot this weekend?

Check the Dayfari events page - the annual fixtures (Parkash Purab dastar camp, Lohri, Baisakhi, Bandi Chhor Divas) are listed there, and dated listings land there as the town crew verifies them. A festival week can reshape the whole weekend.
