Itineraries

Sorel-Tracy itineraries: a quay, a fair and a ferry in a ville of 35,165

One day downtown, a weekend around the festival or the ice, a week on the town's weekly systems -- the shapes that actually work.

One day in Sorel-Tracy: the quay, the square and a show in the old market hall

A Sorel-Tracy day works best on foot downtown, because the cluster stacks close: the carre Royal with its cenotaphe, the quai Catherine-Legardeur on the Saint-Laurent at the end of the downtown streets, and the Marche des arts Desjardins at 28 rue du Roi, where Azimut diffusion programmes the Salle Georges-Codling. Sorel-Tracy is a ville of 35,165 people (Statistics Canada 2021 Census, the Ville de Sorel-Tracy census subdivision) in Monteregie, Quebec, at the confluence of the Richelieu River and the fleuve Saint-Laurent, at 46.0438, -73.1133 in the America/Toronto time zone. It is the chef-lieu of the MRC de Pierre-De Saurel -- a regional capital with its own council, hospital, cegep and school-service centre, not a suburb of a bigger city. The ville was constituted on 15 March 2000 by the fusion of Sorel and Tracy, whose sectors face each other across the Richelieu near its mouth. It governs itself from the Hotel de ville, 71 rue Charlotte, under Mayor Patrick Peloquin and eight district councillors. French is the mother tongue of 96.2 percent of residents, and venue and event names are printed in French here, exactly as their organizers publish them

Give the morning to the quay and the square, the afternoon to the Maison des gouverneurs and the Biophare on the chemin des Patriotes, and the evening to whatever the town has actually dated: an Azimut bill, an Eperviers night at the Colisee Cardin, or a market-square evening in festival season. The dated spine to plan around: Azimut diffusion, the town's diffuseur since 1989, programming the Salle Georges-Codling du Marche des arts Desjardins, 28 rue du Roi -- a 345-seat hall in a Ville-owned building downtown. Its dated autumn 2026 bills captured at publishable grade are: Pour une autre histoire d'un soir (Joe Bocan, Marie Carmen and Marie Denise Pelletier) on Friday October 9, 2026 at 20h; Stephane Rousseau, En rodage, on Friday October 23 and Saturday October 24, 2026 at 20h -- published COMPLET, with a waitlist open; and Rires tous azimuts on Friday November 20, 2026, carried at calendar grade (title, date and venue -- no time was published, so none is printed)

Two and three days: fair, festival and crossing shapes

The Gib Fest weekend

Downtown, carre Royal sector -- mid-July, the festival's own window

Sorel-Tracy's dated 2026 festival spine, each edition on its organizer's own published record and all past at this build: the Gib des Neiges winter carnival (5e edition, Friday February 20 to Sunday February 22, 2026, on the quai Catherine-Legardeur, admission published at 10 dollars a day); the Regates internationales de Sorel-Tracy (5e edition, Friday June 5 to Sunday June 7, 2026, hydroplane racing on the Saint-Laurent off the same quai); the Expo agricole de Sorel-Tracy (177e edition, Wednesday June 10 to Sunday June 14, 2026, on the Societe d'agriculture de Richelieu's own grounds at 216 rue Victoria); and the Gib Fest (48e edition, Thursday July 9 to Saturday July 18, 2026, Groupe Gib's ten-day summer festival downtown around the carre Royal). No 2027 edition of any of them has been announced on the surfaces read, and no date is derived here from any past pattern Build the weekend around the downtown stages and the dish the festival carries: the gibelotte des iles de Sorel -- the islands' heritage fish stew, the dish this river town is known for. There is no separate 2026 Festival de la gibelotte: the dish lives inside the town's two Gib productions, listed among the Gib Fest's own themes by the regional tourism office and woven into the Gib des Neiges' founding lore. The Gib Fest is the modern form of the historic gibelotte festival, and this guide never manufactures a standalone gibelotte festival from historic references

The Expo and Regates ground

Rue Victoria and the quay -- early June, back to back

June stacks the town's two big outdoor productions a few days apart: hydroplanes off the quai Catherine-Legardeur (June 5-7, 2026) and the 177e Expo agricole on the society's grounds at 216 rue Victoria (June 10-14, 2026), five days of dairy judging, the concours des jeunes ruraux, machinery, rides and evening shows. Both editions are past at this build and carried as canon; their next editions announce on the organizers' own surfaces, never derived here.

The Marche de Noel weekend

Downtown -- weekends November 28 to December 6, 2026, upcoming

the Marche de Noel de Sorel-Tracy, Groupe Gib's Christmas market downtown, running weekends from Saturday November 28 to Sunday December 6, 2026 -- upcoming at this build, on the regional tourism office's own listing. Its grande parade du Pere Noel is part of the market's tradition, but no 2026 parade date was published on the surfaces read, so none is printed or derived from the 2025 edition; check Groupe Gib's own pages in November Pair the market with the heritage fact that makes this town's Christmas singular: the first recorded Christmas tree in North America was lit at the Maison des gouverneurs in 1781.

A week, or a season, in Sorel-Tracy

A week here runs on the town's weekly systems: the Ville calendar and its library stream across two branches, the curling club's league nights at the place des Loisirs, the cegep's Centre sportif, the cinema's weekly programme and the halls circuit from the Centre culturel to the Centre Notre-Dame. Day out, by purpose: the ferry to Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola as itself (outside town), Longueuil as itself (outside town), Montreal as itself (outside town). One honest shape note: this is a regional capital, so the week never runs dry the way a suburb's can -- the bench is institutional, dated and French-first, and the calendar, not a strip, is what you plan around.

Common questions

How many days do you need in Sorel-Tracy?

One full day covers the quay, the carre Royal, the Maison des gouverneurs and an evening show or hockey night. Two to three days is the sweet spot -- a Gib Fest, Expo or Marche de Noel weekend. A week works if you plug into the weekly systems: the library calendar, the curling leagues, the cegep and the halls.

When is the best weekend to visit Sorel-Tracy?

Gib Fest in mid-July for scale (48e edition, July 9-18, 2026, past); early June for the Regates and Expo back to back; the Fete nationale evening of June 23 at the parc Regard-sur-le-Fleuve; or the Marche de Noel weekends, November 28 to December 6, 2026, for the cold-season flagship -- all past editions carried as canon, upcoming dates only where an organizer has published them.
