Day trips from Sorel-Tracy
The river first, the fair town next, the ferry shore last -- each destination under its own name.
Day trips from Sorel-Tracy: the river first, then the quay, the fairgrounds and the ferry shore
Sorel-Tracy's trips sort the way its two rivers do. Sorel-Tracy is a ville of 35,165 people (Statistics Canada 2021 Census, the Ville de Sorel-Tracy census subdivision) in Monteregie, Quebec, at the confluence of the Richelieu River and the fleuve Saint-Laurent, at 46.0438, -73.1133 in the America/Toronto time zone. It is the chef-lieu of the MRC de Pierre-De Saurel -- a regional capital with its own council, hospital, cegep and school-service centre, not a suburb of a bigger city. The ville was constituted on 15 March 2000 by the fusion of Sorel and Tracy, whose sectors face each other across the Richelieu near its mouth. It governs itself from the Hotel de ville, 71 rue Charlotte, under Mayor Patrick Peloquin and eight district councillors. French is the mother tongue of 96.2 percent of residents, and venue and event names are printed in French here, exactly as their organizers publish them. The town fills days without a highway: a downtown quay that stages hydroplane racing, a fairgrounds with a 177-edition fair behind it, a heritage house from 1781, and a year-round ferry that turns the far shore into a day out. Beyond the boundary sit the honest outside trips -- Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola across the water above all, then the Longueuil corridor and Montreal -- each its own place, labelled outside town every time.
Sorel-Tracy's own ground: the trips that stay in town
The quay and old-town day
Start where the town meets the Saint-Laurent: the quai Catherine-Legardeur, the riverfront stage for the Regates in June and the Gib des Neiges in February, then walk the carre Royal -- the market square, the cenotaphe and the downtown streets around it -- and finish at the Marche des arts Desjardins, 28 rue du Roi, Azimut diffusion's hall. the Marche du Vieux-Saurel, the town's marche public, an independent operator on the carre Royal downtown (postal address 80 rue George). Its published 2026 season -- its 10th summer edition -- ran Saturdays from 10h to 14h; the exactly dated window carried by the Association des marches publics du Quebec and corroborated by the regional tourism office is Saturdays July 25 to October 3, 2026. That season ENDED on October 3, before this build, so the market is carried in closed-season framing everywhere in this guide: come back in spring 2027 and re-check the operator's own site for the next season. No producer or merchant count is printed for 2026 anywhere -- past editions' counts are edition-specific and are never carried forward
The fairgrounds day
The Societe d'agriculture de Richelieu's own grounds carry the town's agricultural heart: Sorel-Tracy's dated 2026 festival spine, each edition on its organizer's own published record and all past at this build: the Gib des Neiges winter carnival (5e edition, Friday February 20 to Sunday February 22, 2026, on the quai Catherine-Legardeur, admission published at 10 dollars a day); the Regates internationales de Sorel-Tracy (5e edition, Friday June 5 to Sunday June 7, 2026, hydroplane racing on the Saint-Laurent off the same quai); the Expo agricole de Sorel-Tracy (177e edition, Wednesday June 10 to Sunday June 14, 2026, on the Societe d'agriculture de Richelieu's own grounds at 216 rue Victoria); and the Gib Fest (48e edition, Thursday July 9 to Saturday July 18, 2026, Groupe Gib's ten-day summer festival downtown around the carre Royal).. Outside fair week the grounds and the Colisee Cardin next door at 200 rue Victoria anchor the rue Victoria cluster -- the Complexe 180 and the Centre multifonctionnel Richardson ride the same society's land.
The heritage day
The Maison des gouverneurs, 90 chemin des Patriotes, is the town's heritage anchor -- the house where the first recorded Christmas tree in North America was lit in 1781 -- with the Biophare museum on the Lac Saint-Pierre shore story and the parc Regard-sur-le-Fleuve for the river itself. the Ville's green and river layer: the parc Regard-sur-le-Fleuve on the Saint-Laurent shore, where the Ville's Fete nationale fills the evening of June 23; the parc De Grandpre, which hosts the Ville's family Halloween fete; the quai Catherine-Legardeur, the downtown riverfront quay that now stages the Gib des Neiges and the Regates; and the Parc regional des Greves -- a joint park whose Sorel-Tracy accueil is this town's record, while its Contrecoeur accueil is Contrecoeur's, never merged
The place des Loisirs day
The town's working recreation heart: the Centre culturel and cafe-theatre Les Beaux Instants, the Bibliotheque Marie-Didace, the pools and the curling club, all on or around the place des Loisirs, with the Cegep de Sorel-Tracy and its Centre sportif just along boulevard de Tracy. the Club de curling Aurele-Racine, 3010 place des Loisirs, in the place des Loisirs cluster -- LIVE for the current season on the club's own site: its Equipes 2026-2027 page was updated September 22, 2026, leagues begin Monday October 5, 2026 with registration still open, and a Junior inscription form runs activities from Wednesday October 14, 2026. Curling Quebec names the club host site of the Championnat provincial senior masculin, March 17 to 21, 2027. No sheet count is printed anywhere in this guide: a count appears only on a federation platform record, the club's own surfaces state none, and a count prints only when the club states it
The outside places, as themselves -- labelled outside town
Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola, by the ferry
The signature day trip is a crossing: the traverse Sorel-Tracy -- Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola, operated by the Societe des traversiers du Quebec (STQ): a year-round vehicle-and-passenger ferry across the Saint-Laurent, sailing from the gare fluviale in town at 115 rue du Traversier. The operator's own horaire publishes departures from each shore across day and night -- about every 30 minutes by day and hourly overnight in the schedule read -- on a normal two-vessel posture; periodic one-vessel maintenance reductions are maintenance states, not the settled service. No fare is printed in this guide. The far shore is Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola, a separate municipality in Lanaudiere: its gare is that town's record, and Saint-Ignace appears here only as a destination presented as itself, never as Sorel-Tracy content Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola is a Lanaudiere island-and-shore municipality with its own streets, church and river life -- go for the crossing, the shore and the village as itself. Nothing of Saint-Ignace's is Sorel-Tracy content, and the trip is planned around the STQ horaire, with the return sailing checked before the last one of the evening.
Longueuil
Longueuil is the corridor city the town's buses actually serve: getting around Sorel-Tracy by bus, stated plainly: two operators run the town's services and neither of them is the Ville. The Societe de transport collectif de Pierre-De Saurel (STC), mandated by the MRC de Pierre-De Saurel, runs the ligne 10 urban circuit -- free again since May 1, 2026, per the operator's own release -- the express lines 750, 751, 752 and 753 on the Sorel-Tracy to Longueuil corridor, and the MRC-wide taxibus and transport adapte. Exo, secteur Sorel-Varennes, runs ligne 700 Sorel-Tracy -- Longueuil; exo ended its local Sorel-Tracy service in 2022 and kept the 700. Each line is printed under its own operator's name, never merged and never attributed to the Ville. There is no passenger rail station in town. Its metro station and Terminus Longueuil are Longueuil's, named here as access only -- the interchange where Sorel-Tracy's express lines hand you to the Montreal metro. Longueuil's own sights are Longueuil's record.
Montreal and Montreal-Trudeau (YUL)
Montreal is the big-city day: stages, museums, the old port and the airport run. The air picture is stated once, plainly: Sorel-Tracy has no airport of its own, and this guide builds no airports page for it. The airfield gazetteers file as 'Aeroport de Sorel' (CSY3) is seated in Saint-Robert, a separate municipality southeast of town -- a small general-aviation strip with a single runway and no scheduled service on any surface read; it is a neighbour's aerodrome, named for completeness, never Sorel-Tracy infrastructure. In town itself there is only a heliport, which is not a gateway. The commercial gateway is Montreal-Trudeau (YUL), in Dorval -- named here as gateway only. No road distance or drive time for the Sorel-Tracy to YUL run is printed anywhere in this guide, because no coherent routing figure was read; the only figure printed is the labelled straight-line class of about 80 km from the town's registry point to the airport's published coordinates, printed as a straight-line class only, never as a road distance. The layover verdict is no, at any duration: Sorel-Tracy is an arrival base whose signature onward crossing is the ferry, never a layover stop
Contrecoeur and Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel
The near neighbours ride the same river and are worth their own days: Contrecoeur, with its side of the Parc regional des Greves (the park is joint -- its Contrecoeur accueil is Contrecoeur's record), and Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel across the chenal, the gateway to the iles de Sorel and Lac Saint-Pierre shore. Each is a separate municipality; this guide never seats their venues, festivals or Halloween nights in Sorel-Tracy.
Getting away and getting back -- the crossing, the buses and the gateway truth
the traverse Sorel-Tracy -- Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola, operated by the Societe des traversiers du Quebec (STQ): a year-round vehicle-and-passenger ferry across the Saint-Laurent, sailing from the gare fluviale in town at 115 rue du Traversier. There is no cruise product in any of this: no port call exists at Sorel-Tracy, the town's port layer is cargo, and ships passing on the Montreal--Quebec lane are in transit, never calling.
