Culture & shopping in Jeju

Jeju's retail culture is a traditional market with a gravity well: Dongmun pulls in the food, the souvenirs and the street life, and everything else -- Chilseong-ro, Nuwemaru, the museum shops -- orbits around it.
Dongmun Market: the cultural heart
Everything in Jeju's retail culture orbits Dongmun Traditional Market (20 Gwandeok-ro 14-gil). It's the island's largest traditional market and its de facto cultural center: the seafood hall where the morning auction energy never quite leaves, produce stalls stacked with hallabong and kiwis, and the souvenir rows where tangerine chocolate, omija tea and haenyeo-themed crafts live. Open daily 8am-9pm; the night market (Fri/Sat 6-11pm) is the evening version. This is where you buy the edible souvenirs -- tangerine mochi travels well, fresh hallabong does not.
The shopping streets
Chilseong-ro
Jeju City's main shopping street -- the high-street strip with the chain stores, phone shops and street food, a short walk from Dongmun. The most 'downtown Korea' retail in the city.
Nuwemaru Street
The pedestrian shopping street (누웨마루거리): Olive Young, accessory shops, dessert cafes -- the younger, trendier counterpart to Chilseong-ro.
Dongmun underground and arcades
The warren of arcades around the market hides the interesting stuff: traditional craft shops, hanbok rental for the Gwandeokjeong photos, and stationery stores that are inexplicably excellent.
Museums with shops worth visiting
The Arario Museum in Tapdong (a converted cinema) has the design-shop energy its contemporary-art collection promises -- prints and objects you won't find in the market. The Nexon Computer Museum shop leans tech-nostalgia: keyboard waffles in the cafe, retro-gaming goods in the store. And the Jeju National Museum shop is the quiet pick for books and replicas with actual curatorial backing.
What to actually buy
The honest souvenir shortlist: hallabong or cheonhyehyang citrus (in season, roughly winter), tangerine chocolate and tangerine mochi (year-round, market stalls), Jeju green-tea products, and haenyeo/diver-themed crafts from the market's craft rows. Skip the generic 'I Love Jeju' keychains -- the citrus is the souvenir that gets eaten and remembered.
