Jeju's food scene has two pillars -- black pork BBQ and seafood straight from the haenyeo's catch -- and Jeju City holds the best of both. These are the verified tables: no tourist traps, no closed branches, just the places worth your evening.

Black pork: the main event

Heukdwaeji (흑돼지) -- Jeju black pork -- is the island's signature meat: richer, juicier and more flavorful than mainland pork, and Jeju City is where the great BBQ houses cluster. The ritual is the same everywhere: thick cuts grilled at the table (staff usually handle it), dipped in salt, ssamjang or the local meljeot (fermented anchovy sauce), finished with kimchi jjigae. These are the verified heavyweights:

Donsadon (돈사돈 본점)

19 Upyeong-ro, Nohyeong-dong

The name on every Jeju food list since 2006. Famous for briquette-fire grilling (a smokier note than charcoal), thick-cut geun-gogi, and staff who grill it for you. Expect a queue at dinner -- it's the price of fame, and regulars pay it gladly.

Heukdonga (흑돈가)

11 Halladaehak-ro, near Cheju Halla University

The connoisseur's pick: noticeably thicker cuts than the norm, charcoal-grilled and dipped in bubbling meljeot. The hangjeongsal (pork neck) and black-pork kimchi jjigae round out the menu.

Podowon Black Pork (포도원흑돼지)

51 Sumogwon-gil, Yeon-dong

A solid Yeon-dong option when the famous names have hour-long waits -- proper black pork BBQ in the neighborhood, open daily 11am-10pm.

Jeju Seomdon (제주섬돈)

46 Sammu-ro 3-gil, Yeon-dong

Another Yeon-dong workhorse for the black-pork craving, with abalone and porridge on the menu for the non-BBQ member of the party.

Sukseongdo Aewol Branch (숙성도 애월점)

24-16 Aewol-ro 1-gil, Aewol-eup

Famous for dry-aged black pork with a virtual queue via the Catch Table app -- pair it with an Aewol cafe afternoon. Note: the old Wonnohyeong-ro location in Jeju City is permanently closed; go to the Aewol branch.

Abalone and the sea

Jeju's other edible signature is abalone -- and the classic preparation is jeonbokjuk, abalone porridge, the island's comfort food. The famous Myeongjin Jeonbok is far east in Gujwa (a trek from the city); these are the in-town options:

Eunhye Jeonbok (은혜전복)

24-3 Aewol-ro 1-gil, Aewol-eup

The Aewol favorite: abalone porridge, stone-pot abalone rice, and -- the detail that built its reputation -- complimentary grilled mackerel with the meal. Closed the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month.

Haenyeo Jamsuchon (해녀잠수촌)

498 Seohaean-ro, Yongdam

Run by haenyeo (the island's women divers): abalone porridge and seafood stews from the morning's catch. Open 8am-3:30pm daily -- this is a lunch mission, not dinner.

Sanho Jeonbok

near Jeju Airport

The practical pick: opens early, specializes in abalone porridge and sashimi, easy to hit on arrival or departure day. Reviews are mixed on service -- go for the food, keep expectations calibrated.

Eating at Dongmun Market

The market is a meal in itself. The daytime food alley (11am-6pm) does street food and casual dine-in; the night market (Fri/Sat 6-11pm) is where you graze: blow-torched black pork skewers, abalone gimbap, cheesy lobster, hotteok, and the tangerine mochi visitors write home about. Fresh-squeezed hallabong juice is the non-negotiable drink. Cash still helps at the stalls, though cards are widely accepted now.

Good to know

Black pork BBQ houses are dinner places -- most open mid-afternoon and run to 10-11pm. Last orders can be strict at the famous spots (Donsadon's is 9pm). Solo diners: BBQ for one is culturally awkward but increasingly accommodated; the market food alleys are the easier solo play. And the seafood rule holds: the closer to the catch, the better -- Yongdam and Aewol beat downtown for freshness.

Common questions

What is Jeju black pork and why is it special?

Heukdwaeji is pork from Jeju's native black pigs, raised on the island. It's prized for richer marbling and deeper flavor than standard pork -- the difference is most obvious in thick-cut BBQ cuts grilled over briquette or charcoal.

Do I need a reservation for black pork BBQ?

At Donsadon and Sukseongdo, expect waits at dinner -- Sukseongdo runs a virtual queue through the Catch Table app. Weekday lunches are the low-friction move.

Where can I eat abalone porridge in Jeju City?

Eunhye Jeonbok in Aewol (with the famous free grilled mackerel), Haenyeo Jamsuchon in Yongdam for the haenyeo-run experience (lunch only), or Sanho Jeonbok near the airport for an arrival/departure-day bowl.

Is Dongmun Market good for dinner?

The night market (Friday and Saturday, 6-11pm) is excellent for grazing -- skewers, gimbap, mochi, juice. For a sit-down dinner, the black pork houses or a seafood restaurant are the better call.
