Hidden gems in Jeju

The famous Jeju is waterfalls and sunrise peaks. The hidden Jeju is a 1448 pavilion in the old downtown, horse-shaped lighthouses on a local beach, and a rainbow seawall the tour buses drive past. All within the city, all real.
The old city most visitors walk past
Jeju City's historic core is compact, walkable, and strangely under-visited compared to the coast -- which is exactly what makes it the hidden-gem district:
Gwandeokjeong Pavilion
Built in 1448 as a military training pavilion, now Jeju's oldest standing building -- painted girders, the Prince Anpyeong signboard, traditional games you can actually play in the courtyard. Entry is around a thousand won; hanbok rental shops nearby do the photo package. Fifteen minutes here reframes the whole island's history.
Jeju Mokgwana
The restored provincial government office -- the political heart of Jeju from the Tamna kingdom through Joseon, excavated from 1991 and rebuilt by 2002. It hosts nighttime events through the year; check the program before you go.
The coast the tour buses skip
Yongduam (Dragon Head Rock)
A lava formation that genuinely looks like a dragon's head rearing from the sea -- best at sunset, best with the coastal walk. The haenyeo costume rental shop (Miya's Closet) nearby does the photo experience on the Yongduam coastal road: traditional diver outfit, sea backdrop, 1.5 hours. It's dress-up, not diving -- labeled honestly, it's fun.
Iho Tewoo Beach
The horse lighthouses -- one red, one white, both shaped like Jeju ponies -- are the photo, but the beach itself is the find: a local swimming beach at sunset with the airport's landing planes overhead. Free, unhurried, and ten minutes from downtown.
Rainbow Coastal Road (무지개해안도로)
A seawall painted in rainbow stripes along the Dodudong waterfront -- purpose-built for photos, and it works. Walk or cycle it; the cafes along the stretch are the reward.
Sarabong Peak
The night-view hill on Olle Route 18: cherry blossoms in spring, city lights after dark, a short climb the tour buses don't bother with. The local's panorama.
Small museums, big stories
Kim Man-duk Memorial Hall
The memorial to Jeju's legendary merchant-philanthropist, who saved the island from famine in the 1790s and became a folk hero. Small, quiet, and the best single window into Jeju's merchant history.
Hangpaduri Hangmong Historic Site
The anti-Mongol fortress site -- canola flowers in spring, cosmos in fall, and a history most visitors never hear. Combine with the Olle 16 walk.
Common questions
What is Gwandeokjeong?
A pavilion built in 1448 for training soldiers, now the oldest building on Jeju Island. It anchors the restored Jeju Mokgwana government-office complex in the old downtown -- entry costs about a thousand won.
Where are the horse lighthouses?
At Iho Tewoo Beach in Iho-dong, west of downtown: one red and one white lighthouse shaped like Jeju ponies. Best at sunset, free, and very much a local beach rather than a tourist operation.
What is the Rainbow Coastal Road?
A rainbow-painted seawall road along the Dodudong coast near downtown Jeju -- a walking and cycling photo spot with sea views and cafes along the way.
