Hiking & walking
Walking Alma: two shores and the great lake loop
A river walk through town, a lake site across it, and the loop that ties them to the lake.
Hiking and walking in Alma: a river shore, a lake site and the great cycling loop
Alma walks the way it is built: along water. The Grande Décharge runs through the middle of the ville, lac Saint-Jean opens at its edge, and the tour-du-lac route passes through town. There is no mountain brand to borrow here and this page borrows none -- the walking is shore walking and site walking, described by its anchors, with distances deliberately unprinted where no operator surface settles them.
The town walk's anchor: Parc Falaise, on the downtown shore -- the belvédère, the festival fireworks ground, and the shore path east and west. Pair it with the crossing to the Isle-Maligne sector for the two-shores version: one town, two banks, and the 1962 fusion legible under your feet.
The walks, by water
The lake site
the Centre de villégiature Dam-en-Terre, 1385 chemin de la Marina, across the Grande Décharge -- Alma's own recreation site, Ville-owned and managed by Développement Économique Alma Lac-Saint-Jean since January 1, 2025: a campground of 278 sites, chalets, a plage publique, the Port de plaisance d'Alma marina (its Saison 2026 plaisancier rules are published), a théâtre d'été and a navette nautique. It is also the town's triathlon ground: the Triathlon Desjardins d'Alma, 5th edition, ran there on Saturday July 11, 2026 -- PAST. The site's grounds are the town's long walk: campground loops, the marina shore and the plage, on the far bank from downtown. The navette nautique makes it a walker's circuit in season -- over by water, back by the bridge, or the reverse.
The great loop
The tour-du-lac cycling route -- the Véloroute des bleuets -- runs through Alma, and its in-town shore sections walk as well as they ride. Ride or walk it out toward the lake's north shore and the day becomes the Pointe-Taillon trip (next card); ride it west and it becomes the lake tour. The route is the region's spine; Alma is one of its anchor towns, and the route's own surfaces carry its stages.
The park day (OUTSIDE town)
The serious trail-and-beach day is the Sépaq park on the lake's north shore, seated in Saint-Henri-de-Taillon -- presented as itself, planned from Sépaq's own surfaces, and reached from Alma as a trip (or as a Véloroute stage). This guide seats none of its trails in Alma; the trip is Alma's, the park is the park's.
Walking discipline for a two-shore town
Two rules. First, sector honesty: Alma's territory is elongated -- the Saint-Cœur-de-Marie point sits at the far northern end of the ville -- so an Alma walk can be a drive apart from another Alma walk; plan by sector (downtown, Isle-Maligne/Riverbend, Delisle, Saint-Cœur-de-Marie), not by the town's name alone. Second, shore honesty: the Décharge is a working, dammed river -- walk its signed shores and belvédères, and let the river's infrastructure be scenery, not a shortcut.
Common questions
Where are the best walks in Alma?
Parc Falaise and the downtown Grande Décharge shore; the Dam-en-Terre site grounds across the river (marina shore, campground loops, plage); the Isle-Maligne sector's streets and shore; and the Véloroute des bleuets sections through town. The big trail day is the Parc national de la Pointe-Taillon -- outside town, at Saint-Henri-de-Taillon, labelled as itself.
Can you walk around lac Saint-Jean from Alma?
The Véloroute des bleuets circuits the lake and passes through Alma, so the town is a natural start and finish for stages of the loop. Stage details, services and distances ride the route's own surfaces; this guide prints no borrowed figures.
