Itineraries

Alma in days: spectacle weekends, curling weekends, festival week

Plans built on the town's real anchors -- a diffuseur, a curling club, two rinks and a lake.

Alma itineraries: weekends built on the town's real anchors

Alma rewards the traveller who builds around its anchors instead of its adjectives. The anchors: a diffuseur with a dated slate, a curling club in season, a cinema with a weekly grid, two rinks, a co-op kiosk with two half-days a week, a recreation site across the river, and -- in summer -- three festivals that have now run their 2026 editions. Each plan below is honest about its season.

The identity the plans assume: Alma is a francophone ville of 30,331 people (Statistics Canada 2021 Census, the Ville d'Alma census subdivision) in the Saguenay--Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, the chef-lieu of the MRC de Lac-Saint-Jean-Est, built on both shores of the Grande Décharge where Lac Saint-Jean drains east toward the Saguenay River. The current ville dates from the 21 February 2001 fusion with Delisle; its sectors carry the older names -- Isle-Maligne, Riverbend and Naudville (fused 1962, across the Grande Décharge), Saint-Joseph-d'Alma (1976) and Saint-Cœur-de-Marie (2001). Every official surface publishes in French only, and this guide keeps venue and event names in French, exactly as their operators print them.

The plans

The autumn weekend (the build's own season)

Fri-Sun in October: spectacles, ice and the kiosk

Friday: the NORD-Bio kiosk's Friday half-day (9 h 00-13 h 00) for the weekend's local food, then a 20 h curtain -- Ville d'Alma Spectacles, the town's own diffuseur, which programmes the Salle Michel-Côté (605 boul. Saint-Luc, in the Pavillon Wilbrod-Dufour -- a hall of the Centre de services scolaire du Lac-Saint-Jean; a directory variant seats the salle at 850 av. Bégin, flagged here and never merged) and the cabaret room La Boîte à Bleuets, downtown. The October 2026 slate, all at 20 h on the diffuseur's own surface: at the Salle, Liliane Blanco-Binette | Toréador (Fri Oct 9), Dan Bigras | Cette voix (Sun Oct 11), Michel Barrette | Drôle depuis 1957 (Fri Oct 16), Un piano et des mots (Fri Oct 23) and the Quatuor Saguenay | Point de rencontre (Sat Oct 24); at La Boîte à Bleuets, Alphonse Bisaillon (Sat Oct 17), La Boîte à Boldock - Cabaret 2 (Tue Oct 27) and Guillaume Pineault | En rodage (Wed Oct 28). Tickets run through the diffuseur's own billetterie, with points of sale at the Bibliothèque d'Alma and the Salle itself. Saturday: patinage libre or a rink-side morning at the CMT, the Collège's grounds, and an evening film at the Cinéma Complexe Alma, 900 boul. des Cascades, the town's operating cinema on its own exhibitor surface: online ticketing, group screenings and room rentals on its own services pages, and a showtimes grid that rotates weekly -- the grid read for this build (Sun Oct 4 - Mon Oct 5, 2026) carried about nine titles across VF, VO and subtitled screenings. No screen count is printed anywhere in this guide: the only count in circulation sits inside an AI-generated directory summary, not an exhibitor statement, and it does not travel. Beside the commercial house, the Ciné-club d'Alma is a real repertory layer in town, carried at existence grade -- no dated 2026 screening was captured on an organizer surface. Sunday: the Dan Bigras pattern -- a Salle matinée-day built around the diffuseur's Sunday bill when it falls -- and Parc Falaise before the road home.

The curling weekend (Nov 4-15, 2026)

Two bonspiel weekends at Riverbend, back to back

the Club de curling Riverbend d'Alma, 1030 rue de la Gare Ouest, in the Riverbend sector across the Grande Décharge -- 'depuis 1928' in the club's own wording, four sheets as the club's own description states them. Its 2026-27 season is live on the club's own site: the Tournoi Molson runs Wed Nov 4 to Sun Nov 8, 2026, with a live inscription form, and the club then hosts the Curling Québec provincial circuit final, Thu Nov 12 to Sun Nov 15, 2026, with the U15 regionals to follow on Feb 6-7, 2027. Its leagues run evenings for adults, days for retirees, Friday mornings and a Sunday friendly, plus a junior league for ages 8-21. Build the weekend as a spectator or a spare: league nights run through the season, the Molson fills the first weekend, and the provincial circuit final the second. Evenings default to the Salle or the cinema; days to the rinks and the multisport centre's indoor track.

The summer festival week (2027 shape, from 2026 canon)

Festirame week -- printed from the edition that ran

Festirame, the town's summer flagship, run by Festivalma on Place Festivalma and the Grande Décharge shore: the 53rd edition ran July 3-11, 2026, closing with La Grande Nuit d'Alma -- PAST at this build, carried as canon, never as a plan. One flag rides the record unmerged: the festival's own programme span reads 'du 3 au 10 juillet' while the Grande Nuit closing night fell on Saturday July 11; both readings print here, neither is silently preferred. The festival's heart is the water -- the rowing-marathon tradition of the Club d'aviron d'Alma -- and Parc Falaise, on the downtown shore, hosts its closing-fireworks tradition. Around it, the season's ring: the Festival des bières d'Alma, which ran Thursday July 23 to Saturday July 25, 2026 -- PAST -- on the stationnement de l'église Saint-Joseph, downtown. This guide prints NO edition number for it, on purpose: the organizer's own pages disagree on which edition 2026 was, while the dates and venue agree on every surface -- and a number nobody can settle does not get invented here. and the Triathlon at Dam-en-Terre on the Grande Nuit's own Saturday. These are past editions, printed as the shape of the season -- 2027 dates belong to the organizers' surfaces when they publish them.

The week in Alma, and the family variant

A full week adds the slow layers: the Bibliothèque d'Alma's programme and its Saint-Cœur-de-Marie point, the Collège's public rooms (La Tourelle, La Galerie), the Centre culturel's halls, the Véloroute des bleuets ridden out of town and back, and a lake-tour day taken from the day-trips pages. The family variant swaps evenings for ice: the Ville's camp and course machine runs the children's week -- its dated shape was the relâche programme (Feb 28-Mar 8, 2026, PAST) -- and the drop-in grid prices the rest.

Money discipline for every plan: the Ville's Service des loisirs et de la culture (418 669-5111), whose dated calendar is quoifairealma.com and whose 2026 tarification grid prices the town's drop-in life: activités libres (bain, patinage, piste d'athlétisme, hockey libre) at a single entry of 3,05 $ on the grid -- the Ville's own calendar page prints 3,50 $ adulte for evening-and-weekend sessions, and the two Ville figures are carried flagged, never merged -- a carte d'activités libres at 35 $ / 20 $, the Centre multisport indoor-track annual pass at 51 $, and bibliothèque membership free to citizens (25 $-45 $ for neighbours). Public skating is free on weekday mornings at both rinks.

Common questions

What is the best weekend in Alma?

In autumn, the spectacle weekend: a Friday NORD-Bio kiosk half-day, a 20 h show at the Salle Michel-Côté or La Boîte à Bleuets, a rink morning, and a cinema night. In November, the curling weekends (Tournoi Molson Nov 4-8, circuit final Nov 12-15, 2026). In summer, Festirame week -- the 2026 edition ran July 3-11.

How many days does Alma need?

Two days cover the town's anchors; a week adds the lake tour and the fjord day from the day-trips pages. Alma is a base as much as a stop: its own diffuseur, rinks and recreation site fill evenings between day trips.
