Getting to Grimsby: the air park, the gateways, and the train that runs today

Grimsby has an airfield and no airline service, a VIA stop today and a GO station being built -- kept separate.

Getting to Grimsby: a town with an air park, two gateways in other cities, and a train that runs today

Grimsby is the kind of town travellers reach on purpose: along the QEW between Hamilton and the falls, on the shore under the escarpment. This page prints the arrival picture at the grade the operators' own surfaces settle it -- and refuses the three inventions this subject attracts: a bookable flight out of Grimsby, a GO train that has not started running, and a road figure printed harder than its source allows.

Grimsby has its own airfield, and it is NOT a gateway -- the distinction is this town's whole arrival story. The Grimsby Regional Airport (Grimsby Air Park), identifier CNZ8, sits on the town's southern escarpment edge: a private airfield, a CANPASS airport of entry, operated by 2222868 Ontario Inc on the Canada Flight Supplement's record, with no carrier and no scheduled service. The gateways are two, and each is another city's airport, named as such: Hamilton's John C. Munro Hamilton International (YHM) is the primary, nearest gateway, its road distance printed ONLY as the labelled range of about 40 to 45 kilometres (its straight-line class is 28.7 kilometres, labelled as a class); Toronto Pearson (YYZ), in Mississauga, is the full-service international hub, its road distance printed ONLY as the labelled range of about 75 to 85 kilometres (straight-line class 53.3 kilometres). Layover: NO, at any duration.

The arrival picture, piece by piece

By air: YHM first, YYZ for the world

Hamilton's gateway, Toronto's hub -- both labelled ranges

John C. Munro Hamilton International (YHM) is the primary gateway: nearest scheduled service, road distance printed only as the labelled range of about 40 to 45 kilometres, straight-line class 28.7 kilometres. Toronto Pearson (YYZ) is the full-service international hub at a labelled road range of about 75 to 85 kilometres, straight-line class 53.3 kilometres. Bookings and schedules are read on the airports' and carriers' own surfaces.

By air, privately: CNZ8

Grimsby Air Park, the town's own field -- never a gateway

The town's own airfield sits on its southern escarpment edge, about 4.6 kilometres in a straight line from Town Hall: runway 4/22, elevation 631 feet, private use, a CANPASS airport of entry, operated by 2222868 Ontario Inc on the Canada Flight Supplement's record. One wrinkle is flagged and never merged: a federal border-services directory gives the air park a postal address on Mud Street in Hamilton -- the flight supplement's community field and the coordinates seat it in Grimsby. It is real infrastructure for private flying. It is not a way to book a seat to Grimsby.

By road: the QEW town

Livingston Avenue, Casablanca Boulevard and the service roads

Grimsby is a QEW town: the Casablanca Boulevard interchange and its park-and-ride anchor the west end, Main Street carries the old highway's line through downtown, and Town Hall sits at 160 Livingston Avenue just south of the corridor. The QEW Gateway Centre on the corridor is a road gateway -- and not Town-owned, on the Town's own tourism plan's wording, so it prints as a road stop, never as a Town attraction.

By train and bus: the three strengths, kept separate

Rail in Grimsby comes in three strengths, and this guide never blurs them. VIA Rail serves Grimsby TODAY: the station at 99 Ontario Street (code GRIM), an accessible, unstaffed, heated shelter with free parking, is a current stop on the Maple Leaf, the Toronto-New York train run jointly by VIA and Amtrak -- bookable now, at exactly that modest one-long-distance-train strength. GO serves Grimsby by bus only today, from the Casablanca Boulevard park-and-ride on the Burlington-Niagara corridor -- a bus stop is never printed as a GO station. And the Grimsby GO rail station is UNDER CONSTRUCTION, not open: Metrolinx site preparation began June 22, 2026 west of Casablanca Boulevard, construction was announced as begun in July 2026, and local reporting puts train service in summer 2027 -- an expectation, attributed as such, never an operating service.

That separation matters because Grimsby is about to change: a town that today has one long-distance train a day and a bus corridor is building its commuter station now. Until the first GO train is announced by the operator as running, this page prints the station as what it is in 2026 -- a construction site with a 2027 expectation in local reporting -- and prints today's travel at today's strength: the VIA shelter, the GO bus stop, and the road.

Common questions

Can I fly to Grimsby?

Not on a scheduled commercial flight -- Grimsby Air Park (CNZ8) is a private airfield with no carrier. The primary gateway is Hamilton (YHM), road distance printed only as the labelled range of about 40-45 km; Toronto Pearson (YYZ) is the international hub at about 75-85 km labelled range.

Does GO Transit run trains to Grimsby?

Not today. GO serves Grimsby by bus from the Casablanca Boulevard park-and-ride. The Grimsby GO rail station is under construction -- site preparation began June 22, 2026 -- with train service expected in summer 2027 in local reporting. VIA Rail's Maple Leaf does serve Grimsby today, from 99 Ontario Street.

Is there a layover guide for Grimsby?

No. Layover is NO at any duration: CNZ8 has no scheduled service to connect through, and Grimsby is an origin-and-destination town on the corridor, not a hub.
