Farmers' markets & local food
Midland markets: one giant festival market, and the everyday food town
Midland's market life peaks in a single enormous day -- the Butter Tart Festival's vendor streets -- and runs the rest of the year through its downtown food shops and the heritage corridor's own stores. Here is each form, at its evidence grade.
The market, verified and in its season
Midland's market week has a settled anchor: the Southern Georgian Bay Farmers' Markets Sunday market, on the operator's own pages and the Town's own 2026 farmers'-market agreement -- Sundays through the season at 201 Midland Avenue, at Bayshore Drive. Around it run the bigger and stranger forms: a one-day festival that is also the region's largest food market, a downtown core of food shops that trades all year, and farm-and-food stops along the Highway 12 corridor and the county roads, each on its own surface.
Ontario's Best Butter Tart Festival is Midland's signature day: a free, one-day June festival that fills the downtown core and the waterfront parks (David Onley Park and Harbourside Park) with 230-plus vendors and food trucks. The Town's own festival pages give the scale: some 60,000 visitors, up to 300,000 butter tarts for sale in 2026, an entertainment stage all day, a Kids Zone in Harbourside Park, free shuttles and a free bike valet, and the Egg Farmers of Ontario Butter Tart Contest -- traditional and wild-style categories -- judged in Rotary Hall at the Cultural Centre. The festival has sat on Festivals and Events Ontario's Top 100 list since 2019, and the Town publishes the next edition as June 12, 2027, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on midland.ca.
The forms of the outing
The festival market
On festival day the downtown core between Yonge Street and Bayshore Drive and the waterfront parks become the market: 230-plus vendors and food trucks on the Town's pages, butter tarts in every documented style -- plain, raisin, pecan, maple, bacon, s'mores, gluten-free, vegan and more on the Town's own list -- plus handmade goods and the downtown merchants' own festival offers.
The Sunday market
The operator's own Sunday Market page and the Town's 2026 agreement settle the form: Sundays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., from May 17 to October 11, 2026, at 201 Midland Avenue at Bayshore Drive -- Simcoe County farm produce and handmade artisan goods, on Town property the operator has run a market on since 2015. The same operator's season carries a Midland Winter Market edition, Sundays at the Huronia Museum from after Thanksgiving (closed in January on the seasonal record) -- its start date is read with the operator.
The corridor table
Sainte-Marie in brief: Huronia Historical Parks' reconstructed 1639-1649 Jesuit mission village at 16164 Highway 12 East (Tay Township seat, Midland postal address) -- some 25 buildings, costumed interpreters, early-May-to-Thanksgiving season; rates and grid with the operator. The mission site's own surfaces carry a restaurant and the Flint & Timber Co. gift shop -- the corridor's documented food stop, in season.
The contest, the market's judging hall
The Egg Farmers of Ontario Butter Tart Contest is judged in Rotary Hall at the Midland Cultural Centre, free to watch on the Town's FAQ, with the audience tasting what the judges taste and the Best in Show judging in mid-afternoon. Traditional and wild-style categories, professional and home bakers: the contest is the festival's quality engine, and the reason the vendor streets keep inventing new tarts.
Off-season, the honest relay
The market year, printed whole: the Sunday outdoor market runs May to mid-October at 201 Midland Avenue, and the operator's winter edition moves indoors to the Huronia Museum after Thanksgiving (closed in January on the seasonal record) -- so Midland's market is a near-year-round Sunday form, not a summer rumour. The county's other farm stands and seasonal markets in Tay, Tiny and Penetanguishene are read on their own surfaces, as the destinations they are -- close, named as themselves, and never borrowed as a Midland market.
Common questions
Is there a farmers' market in Midland?
Yes: the Southern Georgian Bay Farmers' Markets Sunday market at 201 Midland Avenue (Bayshore Drive), Sundays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from May 17 to October 11, 2026, settled from the operator's own page and the Town's 2026 market agreement -- with a winter edition at the Huronia Museum after Thanksgiving. June's Butter Tart Festival vendor streets are the year's second, enormous market form.
How many butter tarts are at the festival?
Up to 300,000 for sale by vendors in 2026, on the Town's own festival pages, across 230-plus vendors -- plain, raisin, pecan, maple, bacon, s'mores, cheesecake, gluten-free, vegan and more on the Town's list. The first festival in 2013 sold out its 10,000 tarts by 11 a.m.
Do vendors take cards?
Not all: the Town's festival FAQ recommends bringing cash, as several vendors are cash-only, with bank ATMs open downtown. Read the year's FAQ before you go.
