Indoor activities

Indoor Midland: one arts house, one museum park, a complete wet-day plan

The indoor plan here is compact and complete: the Cultural Centre for the calendar, the Huronia Museum for the collections, and the corridor's interpretive interiors when the season allows. For a rain day or a February cold snap, that is a full programme.

The indoor plan, complete

the Midland Cultural Centre, on King Street in the downtown core, is the town's arts house: Rotary Hall -- where the Egg Farmers of Ontario Butter Tart Contest is judged during the festival -- gallery space, and the Quest Art School + Gallery's classes and exhibitions on its surfaces. Concerts, theatre, gallery shows and community events fill its calendar through the year; the bill of the week lives with the Centre and Quest Art, never copied here.

Little Lake Park is Midland's inland green, a short walk south of the downtown core: a treed park on Little Lake with the Huronia Museum at 549 Little Lake Park Road inside it. The museum -- Midland's own, founded in 1947 and housed since 1967 in the town's Canada Centennial building -- holds the town's history and art collections and stands beside its reconstructed Wendat (Huron/Ouendat) village, a palisaded village with a full-size longhouse that reconstructs Wendat life before European contact. The museum describes itself as open year-round; its hours and admission live on huroniamuseum.com, never frozen here, because the listings reached disagree on the current price. On the corridor, two interiors extend the plan in season: Sainte-Marie's interpretive museum inside its visitor centre, and the Wye Marsh's interpretive display hall -- reptiles, marsh ecology and the birds-of-prey story -- which runs all year on the Centre's 362-day posture.

The forms of the outing

The arts house

Midland Cultural Centre, King Street

the Cultural Centre in brief: King Street arts house -- Rotary Hall, galleries and Quest Art School + Gallery; concerts, theatre and classes on its own calendar. On a closed-weather day the Centre is the plan's spine: a matinee or concert in its halls, a gallery hour, and Quest Art's exhibitions, all under one King Street roof.

The museum

Huronia Museum, Little Lake Park

Little Lake Park in brief: the town's inland park -- Huronia Museum (549 Little Lake Park Road, est. 1947) and its reconstructed Wendat village with a full-size longhouse; hours and admission with the museum. Year-round on its own account -- the wet-day anchor that does not depend on the corridor's season.

The corridor interiors

Sainte-Marie museum and Wye Marsh hall, in season

Sainte-Marie in brief: Huronia Historical Parks' reconstructed 1639-1649 Jesuit mission village at 16164 Highway 12 East (Tay Township seat, Midland postal address) -- some 25 buildings, costumed interpreters, early-May-to-Thanksgiving season; rates and grid with the operator. Wye Marsh in brief: 3,000-acre wetland centre at 16160 Highway 12 East (Tay Township) -- 25 km of trails, boardwalk, birds of prey, trumpeter swans; open 362 days; admission and tour prices on the Centre's own page.

What the indoor plan is not

Indoor Midland is a fallback plan, not the product: this town is visited outdoors first -- bay, marsh, parks. The interiors are therefore ranged honestly: complete for a closed day (a Centre show, the museum, a gallery, the marsh hall), exact about their grids (all with their operators), and never inflated into a destination the town does not claim. No indoor pool or cinema is asserted for Midland in this guide, because none is documented on the surfaces reached.

Common questions

What is there to do in Midland when it rains?

The Midland Cultural Centre's shows and galleries, the Huronia Museum (year-round on its account), and -- all year -- the Wye Marsh's interpretive hall. In season, Sainte-Marie's interpretive museum joins the list. That is the documented wet-day set.

Are the corridor sites open in winter?

Sainte-Marie and the Martyrs' Shrine run May-to-Thanksgiving seasons on their published postures. The Wye Marsh is open 362 days a year and the Huronia Museum year-round, both on their own pages.

Does the Cultural Centre have galleries?

Yes: the Centre's surfaces carry gallery space and the Quest Art School + Gallery's exhibitions and classes, alongside Rotary Hall's performances. The current hang and bill live with the Centre and Quest Art.
