Nightlife

Nightlife in Midland: an event town's evenings, at their true size

There is no late-night strip in Midland, and this guide will not invent one. The night here is event-shaped: a Cultural Centre show, a sunset sailing, a King Street dinner. Here is the documented night.

The documented night, first

the Midland evening has documented forms, and this guide invents no others: a Cultural Centre concert or theatre night on King Street; a dinner or sunset sailing on the Georgian Spirit in season; dinner on the downtown and waterfront patios in summer; and, all summer, the long light on Midland Bay from Harbourside Park. Dinner beforehand is chosen among the town's restaurants, each with its own hours: this guide names the evening's forms, not a late-night strip a harbour town of this size does not claim.

the Midland Cultural Centre, on King Street in the downtown core, is the town's arts house: Rotary Hall -- where the Egg Farmers of Ontario Butter Tart Contest is judged during the festival -- gallery space, and the Quest Art School + Gallery's classes and exhibitions on its surfaces. Concerts, theatre, gallery shows and community events fill its calendar through the year; the bill of the week lives with the Centre and Quest Art, never copied here.

The forms of the outing

The stage night

Midland Cultural Centre, King Street

the Cultural Centre in brief: King Street arts house -- Rotary Hall, galleries and Quest Art School + Gallery; concerts, theatre and classes on its own calendar. A concert or theatre night at the Centre is the town's standing evening anchor; its calendar is the grid.

The sailing night

Georgian Spirit dinner and sunset cruises, in season

boating is Midland's summer grammar: a working harbour and marinas on Midland Bay, the southern gateway to Georgian Bay's 30,000 Islands, with the sightseeing ship Georgian Spirit sailing from the Town Dock in season (165 King Street on the tourism listings) on sightseeing, lunch, dinner and sunset cruises, and private charters and water taxis working the islands from the town's docks. Launch rules, dockage and the day's sailing grid live with the Town, the marinas and the operators -- the full treatment is on this guide's cruises page. In season the harbour itself is the venue: the Georgian Spirit's dinner and sunset sailings leave from the Town Dock, and the day's grid lives with the operator.

The street night

King Street dining and pubs

Downtown King Street carries the town's restaurant and pub evenings, a short walk from the waterfront parks. Each house keeps its own hours and its own bill; this guide asserts no standing late-night venue that a house has not published.

The festival night that isn't

Even Midland's biggest day ends early: the Butter Tart Festival runs 9 to 5, its entertainment stage 10 to 5 on the Town's FAQ -- the town's signature party is a daytime one, and the evening after it belongs to the harbour and to King Street dinners. The corridor's one famous after-dark form is seasonal and ticketed: Sainte-Marie's candlelit First Light evenings in late fall, read with Huronia Historical Parks.

What this guide does not claim

No nightclub and no bar strip is documented on the town surfaces reached, and none is claimed here. Barrie's and Collingwood's fuller late nights are the region's bigger nights out -- drives, with the drive home planned before the first drink, as this guide prints on every evening page.

Common questions

What is there to do at night in Midland?

A concert, play or gallery night at the Midland Cultural Centre; in season, a dinner or sunset cruise on the Georgian Spirit from the Town Dock; dinner downtown on King Street or on the waterfront; and the sunset itself from Harbourside Park. In late fall, Sainte-Marie's First Light evenings are the corridor's after-dark event.

How late does Midland stay open?

Event-late, not strip-late: the documented night ends with its events and its sailings. Restaurant and pub hours live with each business.

Is there a nightclub in Midland?

None is documented on the surfaces reached, and this guide claims none. The town's night is stages, sailings, dinners and the harbour.
