Saugeen Shores festivals: giant pumpkins in October, birds in May, boats in July

The calendar here has three peaks of three different kinds -- a harvest giant-vegetable festival in October, a birding festival in a provincial park in spring, and a marine heritage weekend in high summer -- with senior hockey carrying the winter between them.

Three peaks, three seasons, one hockey winter between them

Port Elgin Pumpkinfest is the town's autumn peak and one of Ontario's great small-town fall festivals: a first-weekend-of-October takeover of downtown Port Elgin built around giant-vegetable weigh-offs run under Giant Pumpkin Commonwealth rules, the Cinderella's Carriage antique and classic car show -- hundreds of registered cars through the downtown, with registration capped at 800 vehicles on the festival's 2026 listing -- a midway, an artisan craft show, food and live entertainment. The 2026 edition ran Saturday October 3 (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and Sunday October 4 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) on the festival's published listings, with the midway opening Friday evening October 2 and a first-ever Pumpkin Bowl high-school football game under the lights at the Saugeen District Senior School field that Friday. Admission, wristbands and the car-show grid live with the festival; the listings reached are summarised at todocanada.ca.

The spring peak is quieter and older in its way: the Huron Fringe Birding Festival, based at MacGregor Point Provincial Park in late May and early June, when the park's wetlands and shore woods fill with migrating birds and the birders who follow them -- guided walks, workshops and the park interpreters' programme, run with Ontario Parks and the festival's own surfaces. A fall sibling, Witches in the Woods, follows Thanksgiving in the same park.

The October peak

Port Elgin Pumpkinfest, downtown Port Elgin

First weekend of October: two days of Giant Pumpkin Commonwealth weigh-offs, the Cinderella's Carriage car show (registration capped at 800 vehicles on the 2026 listing), a midway that opens Friday evening, an artisan craft show, food and entertainment across the downtown core. In 2026 the festival added a Friday-night Pumpkin Bowl high-school football game under the lights.

The spring peak

Huron Fringe Birding Festival, MacGregor Point

Late May into early June at the provincial park south of Port Elgin: the migration, professional-guided walks and a festival programme built on one of the most ecologically varied shorelines on Lake Huron. Registration and the programme live with the festival and Ontario Parks.

The July peak

Marine Heritage Festival, Southampton

A late-July weekend across Southampton -- the Bruce County Museum, Pioneer Park and Fairy Lake among its grounds on the Marine Heritage Society's accounts -- celebrating the harbour town's marine past, in the same weeks as the Society's Friday Artisans & Tastes Market and the daily Chantry Island tours.

The winter carrier

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks are the town's senior hockey club, and a Winterhawks night is the town's standing winter evening: home games at The Plex in Port Elgin, with select home games at the Southampton Coliseum, in the Ontario Elite Hockey League on the club's account. The club's published terms for the 2025-26 season -- a $125 season ticket, $12 playoff single-game admission at the door, children 12 and under free with an adult ticket -- are printed at club grade on winterhawks.net; the current season's grid and terms are read there, never frozen here. Between the festivals, the standing calendar is the Town's and the County's: recreation programmes at The Plex and Centennial Pool, the museum's programme year in Southampton, and the library branches' calendars in both centres -- each read with its owner, never copied into a grid here.

What this guide does not do with dates

Festival dates are printed only where a primary or festival surface publishes them: the Pumpkinfest listings for October 2026, Ontario Parks for the park's festival weekends, the Marine Heritage Society for its July forms. Everything else is printed as a form in its season, with its date read at its organizer -- never projected from a past year's listing.

Common questions

When is Port Elgin Pumpkinfest?

The first weekend of October, in downtown Port Elgin -- in 2026, Saturday October 3 and Sunday October 4, with the midway opening Friday evening October 2. Giant-vegetable weigh-offs and the Cinderella's Carriage car show are its two main events; admission and wristband terms live with the festival.

When is the Huron Fringe Birding Festival?

Late May into early June, based at MacGregor Point Provincial Park just south of Port Elgin, timed to the spring migration through the park's wetlands and woods. The programme and registration live with the festival and Ontario Parks.

What is on in Saugeen Shores in winter?

Winterhawks senior hockey at The Plex and the Southampton Coliseum, MacGregor Point's winter programme (yurts, ski and snowshoe trails, the lit skating oval), the museum and library programme calendars, and the Town's recreation grid. The beaches, markets and island tours are warm-season forms.
