Indoor activities
Indoor Saugeen Shores: a county museum, a pool, an arena and an art school
The bad-weather bench here is deeper than most beach towns': a county museum with a full programme year, a town pool and arena complex, an art school in the heritage centre, and a library branch in each town. The rainy day here is a scheduling problem, not a shortage.
The bad-weather bench
The Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre, in Southampton, is Bruce County's museum -- a county institution seated in this town, credited to the County every time it appears here. Its galleries carry the county's story, including the marine history of this shore and material on the Chantry lightstation, and its programme calendar runs through the year, busiest in summer. Beside it, Southampton's own arts life centres on the Southampton Arts school and gallery tradition -- art instruction and exhibitions in the old town hall quarter -- and the Bruce County Public Library keeps branches in both centres, Port Elgin and Southampton, on the county library's surfaces at library.brucecounty.on.ca.
The Plex -- the Saugeen Shores Community Complex, 600 Tomlinson Drive, Port Elgin -- is the town's indoor civic centre: an arena with seating for about 1,100, community hall and meeting rooms, and the Town's administration offices under the same roof. It is home ice for the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks senior hockey club, and its ice, hall and programme grids live with the Town. Southampton keeps the town's second arena, the Southampton Coliseum at 26 Albert Street South, which hosts select Winterhawks home games on the club's account.

The pool
The Town's indoor public pool: lane swims, aquafit, family and fun swims on the Town's published schedules (drop-in fees on the same surfaces -- a single adult visit was $5.25 on the Town's 2025 holiday schedule). The Town's new Aquatic & Wellness Centre beside The Plex is a coming facility on the Town's announcements; its status is read with the Town.
The art hour
Course days at the art school and gallery time at the county museum carry the creative rainy day in Southampton -- both calendars live with their owners.
The rink day
The Plex in brief: 600 Tomlinson Drive, Port Elgin -- arena (about 1,100 seats), hall, meeting rooms and the municipal office; Winterhawks home ice. Southampton Coliseum, 26 Albert St S, is the second rink. Public skating and programme ice live on the Town's recreation grid, read there for the week.
The library layer
Two branches, one system: Bruce County Public Library's Port Elgin and Southampton branches are the town's free indoor rooms -- reading, programmes, local history shelves -- with hours that differ by branch and season on the county library's surfaces. On a three-day rain, the branches and the museum between them are the itinerary, and there is no shame in that: Southampton has been entertaining wet weeks since the steamboat era.
What rain does not cancel
The town itself: both main streets under an umbrella are still themselves, the lake in weather is a spectacle watched from the shore and the boardwalk, and the rail trail in rain gear is empty and beautiful. The island boat is weather-called by its operator; Pumpkinfest runs its October weekend in fall weather, dressed for.
