Free things to do
Free in Saugeen Shores: a beach town gives its best away
The beaches cost nothing, the trail between the towns costs nothing, the sunset costs nothing, and the little lake behind Southampton's main street costs nothing. Here is the free Saugeen Shores, with the paid anchors named honestly beside it.
What the town gives away
the beaches in brief: Port Elgin Main Beach by the harbour for the busy sand; Southampton's beach and boardwalk below High Street for the long quiet shore; west-facing Lake Huron water and a sunset every clear evening. The Saugeen Rail Trail is the town's spine on land: a year-round multi-use trail on the old railway bed linking Southampton and Port Elgin, hard-packed stone dust, easy grades, used for walking, cycling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, maintained with the Saugeen RailTrail Association on the county trail accounts at explorethebruce.com. The shore-side companion is the North Shore route: a paved lakeside path from Port Elgin's Main Beach toward Southampton along the water, so the classic local ride goes out by the lake and back by the rail trail.
Southampton adds the free heritage layer: Fairy Lake's park and paths, the High Street storefronts read from the sidewalk, the boardwalk shore below the lighthouse island, and the county museum's grounds -- the museum itself is the County's, with its own admission terms, printed on the culture page rather than waved through here.
The free layer, carded
The lake circuit
Port Elgin Main Beach, the harbour shore, the North Shore path's lookouts and Southampton's beach and boardwalk chain into one free shoreline day, walked or ridden end to end.
The trail day
the trails in brief: the Saugeen Rail Trail linking the two centres on the old rail bed, year-round; the paved North Shore path along the lake; and MacGregor Point's boardwalks and shore trails just south. The full local loop -- out by the lake path, back by the rail trail -- is the town's best free active day.
The reading layer
Bruce County Public Library's Port Elgin and Southampton branches run the free indoor layer -- storytimes, clubs and programme calendars on the county library's surfaces. The branches are the County's; the welcome is the town's.
The park, at its true terms
MacGregor Point in brief: Ontario Parks' all-season park just south of Port Elgin -- 1,492 ha, seven kilometres of shore, wetlands and bird migration in spring, yurts and a lit 400 m skating oval in winter. MacGregor Point is printed on this page with its terms stated rather than softened: it is an Ontario Parks site, and day use runs on the park's vehicle-permit terms, read with Ontario Parks. The town's own trails and shores above are the no-permit free layer; the park's boardwalks are worth the permit, and this guide says both things.
What is not free, said straight
The anchors cost what they cost, at their own counters: the Chantry Island boat tour (pre-booked with the Marine Heritage Society), Pumpkinfest's wristbands, Winterhawks tickets at the door, the county museum's admission, Centennial Pool's drop-in fees on the Town's published schedule (a single adult visit was $5.25 on the Town's 2025 holiday schedule -- read the current grid with the Town). A free-things page that hid the paid town would be lying by shape; this town's free layer is strong enough to stand beside its prices.
Common questions
What can you do in Saugeen Shores for free?
The beaches and the Southampton boardwalk; the Saugeen Rail Trail and the North Shore path between the centres; Fairy Lake; the harbour shores; the sunset, nightly; and the county library branches' programmes in both centres.
Is the Chantry Island tour free?
No: it is a pre-booked, pre-paid guided tour with the Marine Heritage Society -- the island is a federal bird sanctuary and the tour is the only permitted way ashore. The island is admired free from the Southampton shore, where it fills the view.
Is MacGregor Point free?
It is an Ontario Parks site with the park's day-use vehicle permit, read with Ontario Parks -- printed here honestly rather than listed as free. The town's beaches and trails carry no such permit.
