Winter
Winter in Saugeen Shores: hockey at The Plex, skating in the park woods, snow off the lake
Winter here is not a closed season -- it is hockey season, yurt season and rail-trail ski season, on a shore where Lake Huron weather is a planning fact. Here is the winter at its true size.
The cold season at full size
MacGregor Point Provincial Park is the town's nature anchor, and it is Ontario Parks', not the Town's: 1,492 hectares of Lake Huron shore, wetland, fen and forest just south of Port Elgin at 1593 Bruce Road 33, established in 1975 and open all year on ontarioparks.ca. Its seven kilometres of coast, its boardwalks through silver maple swamp and marsh, and its spring bird migration -- the Huron Fringe Birding Festival is based here in late May and early June -- make it one of the most ecologically varied stops on this shore. In winter it stays open: yurt camping, ski and snowshoe trails, and a 400-metre skating oval through the woods, lit for evening skating on Ontario Parks' account.
The park is the winter surprise: MacGregor Point is one of the few Ontario Parks that runs a full winter programme -- yurt camping in the snow, cross-country ski and snowshoe trails, and the 400-metre skating oval wound through the woods and lit until 10 p.m. on Ontario Parks' account. The town's second winter engine is indoor and loud: Winterhawks hockey. The third is the rail trail, which trades bicycles for skis and snowshoes without changing its route.

The game
The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks are the town's senior hockey club, and a Winterhawks night is the town's standing winter evening: home games at The Plex in Port Elgin, with select home games at the Southampton Coliseum, in the Ontario Elite Hockey League on the club's account. The club's published terms for the 2025-26 season -- a $125 season ticket, $12 playoff single-game admission at the door, children 12 and under free with an adult ticket -- are printed at club grade on winterhawks.net; the current season's grid and terms are read there, never frozen here.
The oval
MacGregor Point in brief: Ontario Parks' all-season park just south of Port Elgin -- 1,492 ha, seven kilometres of shore, wetlands and bird migration in spring, yurts and a lit 400 m skating oval in winter. The oval's lights run to 10 p.m. on Ontario Parks' account -- the town's one true night-skating form, read with the park for conditions.
The trail in snow
the trails in brief: the Saugeen Rail Trail linking the two centres on the old rail bed, year-round; the paved North Shore path along the lake; and MacGregor Point's boardwalks and shore trails just south.
The lake in winter, stated plainly
Lake Huron in winter is beautiful and entirely serious: shore ice forms, breaks and moves, and it is never a walking surface in this guide, at any beach, in any month. The documented winter shore is the shore itself -- the boardwalk, the beaches walked in boots, the sunset over the ice -- and the swimming, paddling and island-boat season is closed until its operators reopen it. Winter driving belongs in the same paragraph: lake-effect snow squalls close Bruce County highways in hard weather, and Ontario 511 is checked before every winter run, as the touring accounts warn.
What winter here is not
There is no downhill ski hill seated in Saugeen Shores, and none is claimed; the region's hills are other towns', reached as outings. Centennial Pool, at 780 Gustavus Street in Port Elgin, is the town's indoor water in winter on the Town's published schedules, with the Town's new Aquatic & Wellness Centre beside The Plex a coming facility on the Town's announcements -- read its status with the Town, never assumed here.
Common questions
Can you skate outdoors in Saugeen Shores in winter?
Yes, at MacGregor Point Provincial Park: a 400-metre skating oval through the woods, lit until 10 p.m. on Ontario Parks' account, weather permitting -- plus the park's yurt camping and ski and snowshoe trails. Conditions live with Ontario Parks.
What is there to do in Saugeen Shores in winter?
Winterhawks hockey, the provincial park's full winter programme, the rail trail on skis or snowshoes, Centennial Pool on the Town's grid, the county museum and library programmes, and the winter shore walked honestly. The beaches' swimming season and the Chantry tours return with their operators in spring.
Is the lake ice safe to walk on?
This guide never proposes it. Lake Huron shore ice is moving, broken, dangerous ice; the winter shore is enjoyed from the shore.
