Hidden gems

Hidden gems in Mont-Laurier: lit falls, an old station and a whole second library

Mont-Laurier's best quiet places are working places seen at the right hour: the falls lit at night, the station that became a trailhead, a 162-hectare park most visitors drive past. Here are the quiet ones, with their evidence.

The quiet places, with their evidence

Start with the one the Ville itself lights: the Rapide de l'Orignal sector by the cocathédrale, where the Ville's own loisirs surface describes the permanent illumination of the falls and the cathedrale facade as part of its downtown cultural pole. A river town's postcard, maintained on purpose, best after dark.

The gem pattern here is consistent: heritage buildings still working (the station, the exhibition centre in the hotel de ville), green space at regional scale, and a second library most small towns would not have -- in a sector most visitors never learn is part of the town.

Three quiet places

The lit falls

Rapide de l'Orignal, by the cocathédrale

Water over rock under the church lights, in the middle of town -- the evening walk the locals already take, printed with the Ville's own illumination project as its evidence.

The station

Gare patrimoniale, P'tit Train du Nord

Inaugurated in 1908, the last of a Canadian Pacific station series -- now the anchor of the linear park and home to the Centre d'exposition de la gare's shows.

The second library

Bibliotheque Des Ruisseaux, 1269 boul. des Ruisseaux

A full branch in the Des Ruisseaux sector (in town -- see the sector ruling on the itineraries page), with its own programme: Bebe-Melodies, Bebe-contes, the Club de Lego's Des Ruisseaux sessions.

The big green

The Parc ecologique Le Renouveau -- 162 hectares in the regional recreation repertoire -- is the town's quiet giant: woods and trails at a scale that belongs to a regional park, inside the municipality. Pair it with the parc Ernest-Leonard (the storytime park) and the parc Rosina-Aubin's jeux d'eau for the town's full, unhurried green circuit.

The free workshop nobody expects

The Centre d'exposition's atelier season -- pastel, vitrail, linogravure, kinusaiga, textile arts, free for residents 14+ -- is the town's most gem-like programme: professional-grade workshops in the hotel de ville building, on the Ville's culture page, filled by registration on Amilia. Visitors read the exhibitions; residents make the art.

Common questions

What is the Rapide de l'Orignal?

The rapids on the Lievre at the heart of town, by the cocathédrale -- the Ville permanently illuminates the falls and the church facade as part of its downtown cultural pole. It is the town's emblem view, best at dusk.

What is Le Renouveau?

The Parc ecologique Le Renouveau: 162 hectares of town green -- woods and trails in Mont-Laurier itself, listed in the regional Loisirs Laurentides repertoire.

Is Des Ruisseaux part of Mont-Laurier?

Yes -- Des Ruisseaux is a sector of the Ville (amalgamated in 2003, never reconstituted). Its library branch, its beach and the town airport out boul. des Ruisseaux are Mont-Laurier's. Saint-Aime-du-Lac-des-Iles, by contrast, is a separate municipality -- the two cases are stated in full on the itineraries page.
