Day trips
Day trips from Reims
Reims sits in the middle of the best day-trip territory in northern France: champagne avenues, abbey villages, hilltop cathedrals - most within an hour.
Champagne country
Ãpernay
The essential day trip. The Avenue de Champagne is supposedly the richest street in the world - Moët & Chandon's courtyard, Perrier-Jouët's art-nouveau cellars, and smaller houses pouring tastings without the Reims queues. Walkable from the station; book the big house tours ahead.
Hautvillers
The 'birthplace of champagne' - the hillside village where Dom Pérignon was cellar master at the abbey of Saint-Pierre (now Moët & Chandon property). Combine with the Hautvillers-Cumières vineyard loop walk.
Verzenay
For the Phare de Verzenay - the lighthouse a winemaker built in the vines, now a Museum of Vines and Wine - and the Moulin de Verzenay windmill. Pair with the Faux de Verzy twisted beeches nearby.
Cathedrals and old towns
Laon
One of France's great Gothic cathedrals on a fortified hilltop, with its famous oxen towers. Quieter than Reims, arguably as impressive.
Troyes
Half-timbered medieval old town, outlet shopping on the outskirts, and the champagne of the Aube. A full day.
Châlons-en-Champagne
The departmental capital: canals, half-timbered streets, and a fraction of the tourists.
Logistics
Ãpernay and Châlons are easy by TER from Reims station. The villages (Hautvillers, Verzenay) and Laon/Troyes are car trips - or a taxi from Ãpernay for the villages. These are guide content, not feed events: the Dayfari town feed covers Reims itself.
Common questions
What is the best day trip from Reims?
Ãpernay - 25 minutes by train, the Avenue de Champagne, and a completely different champagne-town atmosphere. Hautvillers pairs with it for a villages day.
Can I visit champagne villages without a car?
Ãpernay is easy by train. The hillside villages (Hautvillers, Verzenay, Ambonnay) need a car or a taxi from Ãpernay station.
Is Paris a day trip from Reims?
Easily - TGV from Gare de l'Est is about 45 minutes. But honestly, most people do it the other way round.
