Hidden gems
Hidden gems in Reims
Beyond the cathedral: a buried Roman forum, a chapel painted by a Japanese master, the room where WWII ended in Europe - Reims hides its best stories well.
The underground and the overlooked
Cryptoportique
A Roman underground gallery - the buried northern wing of the ancient forum - sitting right under the Place du Forum in the middle of town. U-shaped, vaulted, 2,000 years old, and most visitors walk over it without knowing. Open afternoons.
Chapelle Foujita
The chapel Notre-Dame-Reine-de-la-Paix, conceived and frescoed by the Japanese-French painter Léonard Foujita after his mystical experience in the Basilique Saint-Remi. Consecrated 1966, historic monument since 1992, paid for by the Mumm house. Small, serene, unlike anything else in Reims.
Musée de la Reddition
The schoolroom where Germany signed the unconditional surrender on 7 May 1945, preserved as Eisenhower's war room with the original maps and table. IMPORTANT: closed for rehabilitation work since May 2025, with reopening announced for spring 2026 - verify it's actually open before planning around it.
Roman and art-deco Reims
Porte de Mars
A 3rd-century Roman triumphal arch - the widest in the Roman world - standing open-air by the market halls. Free, floodlit at night, criminally under-visited.
Carnegie Library
The art-deco library Andrew Carnegie funded after WWI - the reading room alone is worth the detour, and it's free to enter.
Hôtel Le Vergeur museum
The museum next door to the Cryptoportique - Renaissance mansion, old Reims collections, quiet courtyard. Pair the two in one Forum square visit.
