Hiking trails
Hiking trails in and around Reims
An 18 km green walkway through the city, then the real thing fifteen minutes south: vineyard loops, twisted beech forests and pilgrimage paths in the Montagne de Reims.
In town: the Coulée Verte
The Coulée Verte is Reims' green artery: an 18 km walkway laid along the old towpath of the Aisne-Marne canal. The best sections run through the Parc de la Roseraie, the Les trous de Leu marsh nature reserve - a genuine island of biodiversity inside the city - and on to the 12-hectare Parc de la Cerisaie, a wooded park named for its former cherry orchards. Flat, shaded, and doable in sections - you don't need to walk all 18 km.
The Montagne de Reims (day-trip trails)
The Parc naturel régional de la Montagne de Reims starts about 15 minutes south of town - vineyard hillsides, beech forest, and panoramic views over the Champagne plain. These are half-day trips from Reims, not city walks; drive, or take the train toward Ãpernay and walk from there.
Hautvillers-Cumières loop
4.6 miles, 2-2.5 hours, moderate. The classic: through the vineyards and along the Marne, past the abbey of Hautvillers where Dom Pérignon worked (the abbey is Moët & Chandon property - admire from outside). Best April to October.
Faux de Verzy trail
1.8 miles, under an hour, flat - through the biological reserve of the famous twisted beech trees. Wheelchair-accessible, Tourism & Disability labelled, ideal with kids.
Faux de Verzy forest loop
Around 8 km through the Faux and Saint-Basle reserves - the longer version when the short trail leaves you wanting more.
Via Francigena: Reims to Trépail
The ancient pilgrimage route to Rome passes through Reims - the local section heads from the cathedral toward the vineyards, the Moulin de Verzenay (a Mumm windmill) and the Phare de Verzenay lighthouse-wine museum. Walk a section, not the 2,000 km.
Rilly-la-Montagne vineyard loop
9.1 miles, 3.5-4 hours, moderate. A proper half-day through the vines past Fort de Montbré - best March to October.
Practical notes
Trailheads for the Montagne de Reims are poorly served by public transport - a car (or a taxi from Ãpernay station) makes these trips dramatically easier. Autumn is the glory season: the vineyard colours from the plateau viewpoints are the best free show in Champagne. Note these park trails are page content only - they're outside the town feed's scope.
Common questions
Are there hiking trails in Reims itself?
The Coulée Verte (18 km canal towpath) runs through the city via the Parc de la Roseraie and the Cerisaie woods. For real hiking, head to the Montagne de Reims regional park, about 15 minutes south.
What is the Faux de Verzy?
A stand of dwarf twisted beech trees in the Montagne de Reims - a botanical curiosity on an easy, flat, wheelchair-accessible trail near Verzy.
Can I hike between champagne villages?
Yes - the Hautvillers-Cumières loop and the vineyard trails around Rilly-la-Montagne link wine villages through the vines. Bring water; village shops keep rural hours.
