Classes & workshops in Kenmare

Kenmare’s signature class is the one you can’t take anywhere else: lacemaking, in the town that invented its own lace. Around it sits a smaller scene of outdoor instruction — bikes, boats and the hills. Honest account below; this is a thin vertical and we’re not padding it.

Lacemaking

The Kenmare Lace & Design Centre on The Square is the real thing: the needlepoint lace the Poor Clare nuns taught the town’s women after the Famine, still made and demonstrated here. The Centre runs workshops and lacemaking teaching mainly in the off season (winter) — beginner-friendly, materials available in the shop, and the history lesson comes free with the technique. Winter opening times vary, so ring ahead. The biennial Lace Festival packs in multi-day workshops across nine lace disciplines when it runs.

Outdoors instruction

The adventure operators around the bay offer instruction alongside hire: kayaking, sailing and waterskiing tuition within walking distance of town, and Star Outdoors Kenmare runs the organised activity side. Finnegan’s Bike Hire in the town centre sets you up for the Beara lanes. Golf lessons are arrangeable through the Park Hotel at the adjacent Kenmare Golf Club.

What we haven’t verified

Cookery classes, art workshops and fitness classes are mentioned in passing by travel guides, but we haven’t verified current providers for Kenmare as of October 2026 — so they’re not listed here. Ask at the Kenmare Tourist Information Centre; the town is small enough that they’ll know.
