Culture & shopping in Kenmare

Kenmare is a craft town. The Square is lined with galleries, craft shops and studios, and the town’s two great stories — the lace and the land — are both for sale in the best sense: handmade, local, and worth carrying home.

The lace

The Kenmare Lace & Design Centre at the end of The Square is the cultural anchor: antique lace from the Poor Clare convent, daily demonstrations of the needlepoint technique the nuns taught the town after the Famine, workshops (mostly in the off season), and a shop selling handmade lace, kits, books and gifts. It’s a museum, a classroom and a shop in one small building, and it’s the single most Kenmare thing you can do indoors.

The galleries and craft shops

The Square and the streets off it hold the town’s galleries and craft shops — paintings, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, the west-Kerry greatest hits. The Kenmare Butter Market on The Square is worth a look even if you’re not buying: the old market building now shows modern Irish sculpture and art in a big white exhibition space. For edible souvenirs, Lorge Chocolatier and the smoked-salmon producers are the carry-home picks.

Wednesday: market day

The Kenmare Farmers Market takes over The Square every Wednesday (daily in July and August): local produce, artisan food, crafts, artwork, antiques, secondhand books. It’s the town’s weekly shop window — go hungry, bring cash as backup, and ask before photographing the stalls.
