Itineraries
Kenmare itineraries
Kenmare is a base-camp town: most visitors use it as the launchpad for the two great rings. But the town itself rewards a slower plan — The Square, the stone circle, the bay, and a dinner you’ll talk about for months. Here are the itineraries that actually work, researched October 2026.
The one-day blitz
Morning on The Square: the craft shops, the Lace & Design Centre, the Butter Market art space. If it’s Wednesday, the farmers market runs the show — plan around it. Lunch at a pub (McCarthy’s, Davitt’s, Foley’s: all solid).
Afternoon: the Kenmare Stone Circle, then the Kenmare Bay Walk and the harbour. If you booked a Seafari boat trip, this is its slot. Dinner wherever you fancy — the town is small enough that nowhere is the wrong choice — and a trad session at Crowley’s to close the night.
The three-day classic
Day one as above. Day two: drive the Ring of Beara — the wild, quiet ring, all mountain passes and archaeology. Day three: the Ring of Kerry or, if the weather closes in, Killarney National Park (Torc Waterfall, Muckross House) to the north. Every evening back in Kenmare ends the same way: dinner, then the pubs.
The slow week
Rent a holiday home and stop pretending you’re in a hurry. Alternate ring days with town days: Reenagross Woodland Park one morning, Gleninchaquin Park (the waterfall valley, about a 20-minute drive) the next, a lacemaking workshop in winter, a round at Kenmare Golf Club, a day cycling the Beara lanes with a hire bike from Finnegan’s. The town is built for this pace — it’s how the regulars do it.
Common questions
How many days should I spend in Kenmare?
Two days covers the town properly; three to four lets you drive both rings. A week is the dream version — alternate ring days with town days and never feel rushed.
Can I do the Ring of Kerry from Kenmare in a day?
Yes — Kenmare sits right on the route. A full loop is about 110 miles; leave early, build in stops, and drive it anti-clockwise.
What’s the best itinerary for a first visit?
Day one in town (The Square, stone circle, bay, Seafari), day two on the Ring of Beara. It’s the most Kenmare weekend there is.
