Nightlife

Nightlife in Kenmare

Let’s be honest up front: Kenmare is not a nightclub town, and it would be worse if it were. Nightlife here means pubs with fires, traditional music sessions that start when they start, and a pint of Guinness poured properly. That’s the whole scene — and it’s a very good one.

The pub circuit

Crowley’s Bar on Henry Street is the first port of call: a proper traditional pub with live Irish music sessions most evenings, a cosy fire, and a reputation for the pint. Around the corner, P.F. McCarthy’s on Main Street is one of the oldest bars in town — live gigs from trad to contemporary through the week, and a full pub-restaurant menu if you’re hungry.

Foley’s runs regular trad sessions too, and across the road O’Donnabhain’s pairs music with a building that dates to the town’s 1775 founding. The Horseshoe is the quieter, lazier option — the sit-back-with-a-pint pub. Work the circuit; it’s small enough to do in one evening.

Live music, the Kenmare way

There is no ticketed music venue in town, and that’s the point. The sessions happen in the corner of the bar, unannounced and free. Summer brings them out every night; winter thins them but doesn’t kill them. If live music is the reason you’re here, check what’s on at McCarthy’s when you arrive — their gig calendar is the most organised thing in town’s music scene.

Late nights

Nothing in Kenmare is a late-night venue in the city sense. The pubs close when they close, and the town is asleep soon after. If you need dancing, Killarney is an hour away; nobody in Kenmare is sorry about that.
