Culture & shopping in Clearwater
A frontier museum, one artisan gift shop, the best visitor centre in the valley -- and everything practical within five minutes.
Culture & shopping in Clearwater: small, local, useful
Nobody comes to Clearwater to shop, and the town would be suspicious of anyone who did. But there is a real local culture to plug into -- a frontier-history museum, a gift shop built on local artisans, a visitor centre that doubles as the town's living room, and the outfitter that equips half the park's visitors. Everything is within a few minutes of the Highway 5 roundabout.
The stops
Yellowhead Museum
The town's memory: pioneer and frontier exhibits from the North Thompson's ranching, railway and trapping days. Small, local and the fastest way to understand whose valley you are travelling through. Check seasonal hours at the door or the Info Centre.
The Olde Town Giftshop
The artisan shelf of Clearwater: work by local makers, gathered in one gift shop. This and the farmers' market (Saturdays in season) are where locally made souvenirs actually come from.
Wells Gray Information Centre
Part visitor centre, part town square: maps, trail conditions, local crafts and the staff who will rebuild your itinerary around the weather if you let them. Start every Clearwater trip here -- it is the park's front door.
Wells Gray Outfitters
The gear shop on the park road: sporting goods and outdoor equipment to buy, and mountain bikes, paddleboards, canoes, kayaks and camping gear to rent. The place to fix a forgotten-layer problem or kit out a Dutch Lake paddle.
The practical shelf
Clearwater covers the road-trip basics in town -- groceries, the Wells Gray Home Hardware (86 Clearwater Station Rd), fuel and a pharmacy. Stock up here: there are no shops, fuel or services up the park corridor.
The culture underneath
This is Secwepemc territory -- the valley's first stories are Indigenous ones, and names like Spahats ('bear') carry them. The Clearwater Farmer's Market's own materials acknowledge the ancestral, traditional and unceded territories of the Secwepemc Nation, and the Simpcw First Nation's community at Chu Chua sits down the valley near Barriere. Travellers who want the deeper layer should ask at the Information Centre what is on and open to visitors while they are in town -- that calendar changes, and local direction beats old listings.
