Kids in Clearwater: waterfalls at eye level
Wells Gray is a rare big park where the greatest hits are genuinely kid-sized: the famous falls are short walks, the lake in town is warm and shallow at the edges, and there are turtles. Add a family rafting run and a boat with cake on it, and the valley fills a family week without a single queue.
The family list
Spahats + Dawson: the easy two
Spahats Falls is a 500 m stroll to a canyon rim (hold hands at the platform) and Dawson Falls a 10-minute walk to the 'mini Niagara'. Maximum waterfall, minimum whingeing.
Dutch Lake beach days
The family headquarters: sandy beach, swimming wharf, picnic shade and warm water -- and western painted turtles sunning on the logs for the I-spy game. The farmers' market playground is next door at the community centre field.
Family rafting
Both rafting companies run family versions on the Clearwater River's friendly water -- splashes and waves without the class IV. Riverside's family trip and Interior Whitewater's Catch a Wave run about three hours; check age minimums when booking.
The boat with cake
The electric Duffy boat tour on Clearwater Lake (11am and 3pm sailings) comes with cake and drinks and moves at nature's pace -- the toddler-compatible way to do the big lake. Older kids graduate to the full-day Rainbow Falls run.
Winter: the little hill
A volunteer-run hill with nine gentle-to-spicy runs, a T-bar and no lift lines is where local kids learn -- bring yours. Candle Creek's snowshoe trails and the warming chalet make the non-ski day.
Practical parent notes
The corridor has no fuel, food or cell service between town and Clearwater Lake -- snacks, water and a downloaded movie for the gravel stretch are on you. Helmcken's viewpoint walk is short and barrier-free enough for sturdy strollers; Moul Falls is a carrier hike, not a stroller one. Market Saturday (9-noon) doubles as the playground run.

Is Wells Gray good for young kids?
Yes -- unusually so for a wilderness park. Spahats and Dawson Falls are short flat walks, Dutch Lake has a warm sandy beach in town, family rafting runs on gentle water, and the Clearwater Lake boat tour serves cake. Bring snacks: the corridor has no services.
