Wildflowers on the Trophy Meadows trail

Hiking & walking

Hiking & walking in Clearwater

Waterfall walks in the morning, a wildflower mountain by the weekend -- the corridor's trails, honestly graded.

Hiking in Wells Gray: waterfalls first, then the meadows

The corridor's 200 km of trails split into two families: the waterfall walks, mostly short and stacked along one road, and the mountain hikes -- Trophy Meadows above all -- that climb out of the valley. Distances below are return trips from the trailhead unless stated. One road runs the whole show: Clearwater Valley Road leaves Highway 5 at the Clearwater roundabout and climbs 68 km north to Clearwater Lake. It is paved to the Helmcken Falls turnoff (about 43 km) and good gravel beyond. There is no fuel and no cell service in the park, so fill up in town, download your maps, and treat the kilometre markers as your signposts.

The waterfall walks

Moul Falls

Trailhead km 20.7 · ~5.5 km return · moderate

The signature hike: old road, then forest trail down to Grouse Creek, where a 35 m fall pours into a canyon you can walk into -- and behind. Allow 1.5-2 hours; the stairs back up are the workout.

Helmcken Falls with a rainbow in the spray

Helmcken Falls South Rim Trail

Km 41-42.5 · 8 km return · moderate

Skip the viewpoint crowds and walk the Murtle River's south bank to the brink of Canada's fourth-highest falls. You hear it long before the ground simply ends.

Spahats Falls viewpoint

Km 10.2 · ~0.5 km · easy

Ten minutes from the highway: a short walk to the platform over Granite Canyon, where Spahats Creek drops 75 m into the Clearwater River gorge. The park's handshake.

Bailey's Chute + West Lake Loop

Km 56.8 · 1.6 km to the chute · loop ~5.3-6.5 km

An easy forest walk to the Clearwater River's wildest rapids -- and, in late August and September, Chinook salmon leaping the chute. Extend it into the West Lake Loop for the full morning.

The mountain hikes

Trophy Meadows to Shepherd's Hut

Turnoff km 11.4 · 10 km return · ~500 m gain

The park's best non-waterfall hike: forest, then sub-alpine meadows that carpet with wildflowers from late July into early August, ending at a historic shepherd's hut under nine peaks. Onward routes reach Sheila Lake (camp there) and the summit ridge -- a 12 km day at full stretch.

Green Mountain Tower

Turnoff km 37.7 · ~7 km return · moderate

Up the forest road to the fire-lookout tower for the panorama of the southern park, with side trails to Foot Lake and the White Horse Bluffs. 2.5-3 hours, and quiet even in August.

Chain Meadows Lake Loop

Clearwater Lake, km 68 · 15 km return

The connoisseur's lake walk: lakeshore, a climb to a high viewpoint over Clearwater Lake, temperate rainforest, and the Osprey Falls lookout on the way down. A full, satisfying day at the end of the road.

Before you lace up

There is no cell service on these trails; carry the paper map from the Information Centre and tell someone your plan. This is bear country -- black bears graze the corridor meadows in May and June in some of North America's highest concentrations, and grizzlies work the high country -- so make noise, carry spray where you can reach it, and give every bear the trail. Guided options exist for good reason: Wells Gray Adventures and Discover Wells Gray run interpretive hikes for travellers who want the geology and the bear protocol handled by a pro.

Common questions

Mostly not: the famous falls sit on short, easy walks (Spahats is 500 m), Moul Falls and the Rim Trail are moderate, and Trophy Meadows is a proper half-day climb of about 500 m. Trail conditions are posted at the Information Centre in Clearwater.
