Helmcken Falls in Wells Gray Provincial Park

Date ideas

Date ideas in Clearwater

Scenery does the heavy lifting here -- you just have to pick which waterfall.

Dates in waterfall country

Clearwater dates run on scenery and small surprises rather than reservations and dress codes. The ingredients are all here: a waterfall you can stand behind, a lake patio with turtles in the shallows, a boat on a wilderness lake, and a pub with a pool table for the nightcap.

Four dates that work

Walk behind a waterfall

Moul Falls · km 20.7 · about 5.5 km return

The park's most playful hike ends behind a 35 m curtain of water -- you will get misted, you will laugh, and the photos take themselves. Go mid-morning before the trail gets busy, then lunch in town.

Patio supper with the turtles

Painted Turtle Restaurant · Dutch Lake, seasonal Wed-Sun

The lake-view patio at Dutch Lake Resort serves local produce and BC wines from spring to fall, while western painted turtles sun themselves on the logs below. Book the early seating, then walk the shore at Dutch Lake Park as the light goes.

The big-water day

Rafting or the Rainbow Falls boat tour

Shared adrenaline or shared quiet: a half-day rafting run on the Clearwater River (from about $125-147 each) or Clearwater Lake Tours' full-day boat to Rainbow Falls through two wilderness lakes. Either one gives you something to talk about at dinner.

Flowers + a shepherd's hut

Trophy Meadows · late Jul to early Aug

A picnic in a sub-alpine wildflower meadow under nine peaks, with an old shepherd's hut for shelter and photographs. It is a real hike (10 km return to the hut), which is exactly why it works.

The winter date

Ski the little hill in the morning (rentals in the lodge, no lift line to speak of), soak up the Candle Creek warming chalet at midday, and finish with prime rib at 52 Ridge and a game of free pool. Small-town winter romance is a log fire and nowhere else to be -- Clearwater does it properly.
