Helmcken Falls -- free to visit in Wells Gray Provincial Park

Free things to do

Free things to do in Clearwater

Canada's Waterfall Park charges nothing at the gate. Here is how far zero dollars goes.

Wells Gray is a free park -- here is the proof

There is no entry fee for Wells Gray Provincial Park: day use, the viewpoints and the trails are free, which makes Clearwater one of the great budget bases in BC. Your money goes on beds, fuel and food; the wonders are on the house. (Camping, backcountry permits and tours are the paid layers -- everything on this page is the free one.)

The free list

Four famous waterfalls

Spahats, Moul, Dawson, Helmcken · free

The whole corridor sprint -- a 75 m opener, a walk-behind fall, a 90 m-wide cascade and Canada's fourth-highest waterfall -- costs a tank of fuel and your shoe leather. Parking included, no pass, no gate.

Dutch Lake Park

In town · free

Sandy beach, swimming wharf, picnic areas and warm clear water, a few minutes from the town centre -- plus turtle-spotting from the shore. The locals' living room, free to every visitor.

The Candle Creek trails in summer

East of town · free

The same trail network that skiers pay $10 to glide in winter is free for summer hiking and mountain biking -- 13 km of bike trails plus the walk to Candle Creek Falls.

The farmers' market on a Saturday

Dutch Lake Community Centre · free to browse

Music on the stage, a playground, and the valley's makers in one field, 9am to noon in season. (The baking will get your money anyway. Resistance is documented to fail.)

Stargazing

Anywhere dark · free

No light dome, no fee: the Milky Way over Dutch Lake or a corridor pullout is the finest free show in the valley.

What is not free (so there are no surprises)

Front-country campsites and the Clearwater/Azure backcountry permit ($5 per person per night) are BC Parks charges; rafting, boat tours, rentals and guides are commercial. Everything viewpoint-shaped is free -- plan the paid layer around one big experience rather than five small ones.
