Things to do at night in Clearwater
The Milky Way is the headliner; the pubs are the warm-up act.
Clearwater after dark: the sky is the venue
Ask a local what to do at night and they will point up. Clearwater sits far from any city's light dome, the park corridor has no street lighting at all, and on a clear night the Milky Way does what no bar in town can compete with. The evenings here are short-list country -- a handful of real options, done well.
The night list
Stargazing
Dutch Lake's shore, the Spahats parking area or any corridor pullout will do. Summer brings the Milky Way core and August's Perseids; winter brings early, cold, crystal skies -- and, on the right night, northern lights. Bring a headlamp with a red mode and give your eyes 20 minutes.
An evening at Dutch Lake
The locals' summer evening: a last swim off the wharf, turtles settling on the logs, and the mountains going pink over the water. Calm evenings after 4pm are the lake at its best.
Pub pool + the big screen
Free pool and the biggest screen in town: the classic small-town night, with prime rib if you time it right.
Karaoke night
When karaoke is on at the Inn, that is the town's night out. Check at the front desk for the current night.
Frozen falls by moonlight season
A note of honesty: the corridor is not lit and winter nights are serious. Do the frozen waterfalls -- Helmcken's ice cone, Spahats in its cave of ice -- as the last thing of a short winter day, not as a night trip, and be back in town for supper.
Two rules for the dark
Wildlife owns the roads at night -- moose and deer on Highway 5 and the corridor are the real night hazard, so slow down and use the pullouts, never the shoulder, for sky stops. And remember the park has no cell service: tell your lodging where you are headed if you go up-corridor in the evening.
Common questions
What is there to do at night in Clearwater, BC?
Stargazing under some of the darkest skies on Highway 5, an evening swim at Dutch Lake, free pool at 52 Ridge, karaoke at the Wells Gray Roadhouse -- and early nights before big park days. Nothing runs late; that is the charm and the constraint.
Can you see the northern lights in Clearwater?
On strong aurora nights, yes -- the town's dark skies give you a real chance, especially in winter. There is never a guarantee; check the aurora forecast and get away from the highway lights.
