The Green Mountain viewpoint in Wells Gray

Hidden gems

Hidden gems in Clearwater

The second list: the falls, tower and river slot that the tour vans drive straight past.

Past the big four: Wells Gray's quieter corners

Everyone drives the corridor for Spahats, Moul, Dawson and Helmcken. The park keeps a second list for people who slow down -- falls you can hear before you can see, a fire tower over the whole valley, and a pioneer farm in the forest. All of these sit on or near the same road; none of them needs a permit or a guide.

The second list

Triple Decker Falls + Candle Creek Falls

Km 4.3 · minutes from town

The warm-up act most drivers blow past: a three-tiered fall right off the corridor at km 4.3 (about a 1 km return walk down to the viewpoint), with Candle Creek Falls a 4 km return hike along the Candle Creek trail. Two waterfalls before the park sign even appears.

Silvertip Falls

Spahats Creek road · the park's tallest

At roughly 200 m, Silvertip is the tallest waterfall in Wells Gray -- taller than Helmcken -- yet most visitors never see it. It pours off the Trophy Mountain side above Spahats Creek; ask at the Information Centre for the current access and viewing points.

Green Mountain viewing tower

Turnoff km 37.7 · panoramic south-park views

A fire-lookout tower above the corridor with the whole southern park laid out below, and trails onward to Foot Lake and the White Horse Bluffs. The access is a steep forest road/trail -- allow 2.5-3 hours if you hike it, and take the view as your reward.

Ray Farm + the mineral springs

Mid-corridor · an easy forest loop

Wells Gray's pioneer homestead, slowly being taken back by the forest, with a mineral-springs trail nearby. A gentle, strange, very quiet walk -- the park's human history in one clearing.

The Mushbowl at the Murtle bridge

Km ~41 · look down, not up

Drivers cross the Murtle River bridge between Dawson and Helmcken without stopping. Pull over: the whole river funnels through a slot of lava rock directly under the road. Two minutes, no hike, nobody there.

The in-town gem

Dutch Lake's painted turtles. The warm, lily-padded lake in the middle of town is home to western painted turtles that sun themselves on the logs along the shore -- easiest to spot from a rented canoe or the Painted Turtle patio. It is the smallest wonder on this list and the one locals mention first.

Common questions

What is the most underrated sight in Wells Gray?

Silvertip Falls -- at about 200 m it is the park's tallest waterfall, out-dropping Helmcken, yet most visitors drive past its turnoff. Also: the Mushbowl slot under the Murtle River bridge, and the fire tower on Green Mountain (km 37.7).
