Hiking in King: moraine forest, a ravine of steps, a college lake

Geology did the work -- the moraine's hills, ravines and kettle lakes, described honestly.

Hiking and walking in King: moraine forest, a ravine of steps, and a college lake

King is one of the GTA's real hiking townships, and the reason is geology: the Oak Ridges Moraine's hills, ravines and kettle lakes all cross it. This page is anchor-described, with distances printed only where an operator surface settles one -- which, in this record, is exactly one trail.

King's trail ground is moraine ground. Cold Creek Conservation Area, at 14125 11th Concession near Nobleton, is the Township-run conservation area: forest, wetland and swamp trails for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, an education centre, and dated Township programming -- a Forest Bathing session on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 is recent canon, and a Survivor's Den shelter-building programme for youth ages 8-18 is dated Saturday, October 10, 2026. Thornton Bales Conservation Area, near King City, is famed for its "99 Steps" and a roughly 4.5-kilometre loop through ravines with a greater change in elevation than the drop over Niagara Falls, on the conservation authority's own description. Happy Valley Forest is a large mature forest on the moraine, an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest and home to the Jefferson salamander -- the Township's own calendar dates a Guided Fall Forest Hike there for Wednesday, October 14, 2026, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. The Oak Ridges Trail crosses the township, and the Township itself counts more than 100 kilometres of trails in King. No trail distance beyond the Thornton Bales loop is printed: no operator surface read settles the others, so they are described, not measured.

The walks

Seneca Lake and the King Campus trails

13990 Dufferin Street, King City

Seneca Polytechnic's King Campus, 13990 Dufferin Street in King City -- a real post-secondary seat inside the township, on 282 hectares of woods, fields and lakeshore around Lake Seneca. Its buildings include Garriock Hall and Magna Hall (opened September 27, 2018), a residence of about 230 students, and Eaton Hall, the 1939 Norman-style chateau built for Lady Flora Eaton, which served as a naval convalescent hospital in the Second World War before the college bought the estate. Seneca's own Open House page dates its fall edition at King Campus for Saturday, November 21, 2026, 9 a.m. to noon. The University of Toronto's Koffler Scientific Reserve is also seated in King -- a research station, recorded as such, not a public campus. The campus trail around Lake Seneca is the township's gentlest signature walk -- lake, fields and the Eaton Hall view -- at the access and parking terms the college's own surfaces set.

The Oak Ridges Trail across King

The long line through the township

The Oak Ridges Trail, the moraine's long-distance footpath, crosses King on its way along the ridge, linking the township's conservation lands into one line. Walked in sections from the township's trailheads, it is the through-route behind the day walks on this page; section details live on the trail association's own surfaces.

Kingbridge's Humber trails

Five kilometres, on the venue's own count

The Kingbridge Centre's venue record counts 5 km of trails with varied terrain along the Humber River on its grounds, with snowshoeing and fat-biking in winter on the same record -- a conference centre's woods, walked at the access the venue itself sets.

Walking the villages

Not every King walk is a trail. Schomberg's Main Street is the township's best village walk -- heritage buildings, the pub, the coffee houses, the fairgrounds beside the river -- and King City's King Road corridor links the library, the heritage centre and the GO station into a working village loop. Nobleton's walk is Highway 27's village core and Tasca Community Park, 49 Parkheights Trail, its modern community park. Village walks need no trailhead, no fee and no plan beyond an hour.

Common questions

What is the best hike in King Township?

For drama, Thornton Bales (the 99 Steps, roughly 4.5 km). For a full half-day, Cold Creek Conservation Area's forest and wetland trails near Nobleton. For an easy signature walk, the Lake Seneca trail on Seneca's King Campus. Happy Valley Forest is the deep-woods option, with a Township-guided hike dated October 14, 2026.

Are trail distances listed for King's trails?

Only where an operator surface settles one: Thornton Bales at roughly 4.5 km and Kingbridge's 5 km of trails on the venue's own count. Other trails are described, not measured, rather than printed with a borrowed figure.
