King itineraries: weekends built on the township's real anchors
A museum schoolhouse, a college chateau, moraine trails and two arenas -- planned at the dates their own surfaces publish.
King itineraries: weekends built on the township's real anchors
King rewards the traveller who builds around its anchors instead of its adjectives. The anchors: a museum in an 1861 schoolhouse with a dated arts season, a 282-hectare college campus around a lake and a chateau, moraine trails with guided hikes on the Township calendar, two arenas with junior hockey, a curling club in season, and farm gates that open and close with the crop. Each plan below is honest about its season.
The identity the plans assume: King is a rural township in York Region, Ontario, spread across the Oak Ridges Moraine and the northern edge of the Holland Marsh. It has no single downtown and no single centre: its people live in three villages -- King City, Nobleton and Schomberg -- and in hamlets that still carry their own names, among them Kettleby, Lloydtown, Laskay, Pottageville and Ansnorveldt. Its population is 27,333 (Statistics Canada 2021 Census, Township of King census subdivision) -- a township of villages and farmland, not a small city. The Township governs from the King Township Municipal Centre at 2585 King Road in King City, the anchor point for this guide; a 20-kilometre reach from that anchor covers every named community in the township, from Nobleton and Schomberg to Ansnorveldt in the Marsh. This guide attributes everything by its seat: Vaughan (including Kleinburg and Canada's Wonderland), Richmond Hill, Aurora, Newmarket, Whitchurch-Stouffville and Caledon are neighbours, never King content, however close they sit. Two name traps flood every search for this township and are rejected throughout: King City, California and Kingston, Ontario are different places entirely.
The plans
The fall art-and-forest weekend (October-November 2026)
Arts Society King, the township's arts producer, seated at the Heritage & Cultural Centre. Its current season is dated and public: a first juried Fall Art Show and Sale, themed "Change is in the Air," runs October 13 to November 13, 2026 in the centre's East Gallery; the King Artisan Holiday Market runs November 21-22, 2026 through the centre's historic buildings, with 18 artisan spaces on the society's own announcement; and an Art Lab workshop on portraiture and charcoal drawing is dated November 28, 2026. Its ARTROAM King juried show ran April 11-12, 2026 -- past, and printed here as the shape of its spring, never as a future date. Pair it with the Township's guided fall hike: King's trail ground is moraine ground. Cold Creek Conservation Area, at 14125 11th Concession near Nobleton, is the Township-run conservation area: forest, wetland and swamp trails for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, an education centre, and dated Township programming -- a Forest Bathing session on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 is recent canon, and a Survivor's Den shelter-building programme for youth ages 8-18 is dated Saturday, October 10, 2026. Thornton Bales Conservation Area, near King City, is famed for its "99 Steps" and a roughly 4.5-kilometre loop through ravines with a greater change in elevation than the drop over Niagara Falls, on the conservation authority's own description. Happy Valley Forest is a large mature forest on the moraine, an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest and home to the Jefferson salamander -- the Township's own calendar dates a Guided Fall Forest Hike there for Wednesday, October 14, 2026, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. The Oak Ridges Trail crosses the township, and the Township itself counts more than 100 kilometres of trails in King. No trail distance beyond the Thornton Bales loop is printed: no operator surface read settles the others, so they are described, not measured.
The hockey weekend
King's signature team is the King Rebellion of the Ontario Junior Hockey League -- Junior A hockey at the Zancor Centre in King City, where the Township's own opening release names the centre's rink as the Rebellion's home. The club relocated to King for the 2024-25 season and is current in 2026-27. No fixture is printed in this guide: home dates are read on the OJHL's official schedule, never derived from standings or aggregator surfaces. One tier down, the Schomberg Cougars play at the Trisan Centre, above a three-village minor-hockey system across the Trisan, Nobleton and Zancor rinks. the King Curling Club, which plays at the Trisan Centre in Schomberg -- Schomberg is inside King Township, so this is King's club, and no curling club is seated in King City village. The club runs leagues six days a week from October to April on four sheets, with an adult Learn-to-Curl programme and youth curling. Its 2026-27 registration closed at midnight on Friday, September 18, 2026, and its own surfaces carry dated items forward from here: pre-registration for Adult Learn to Curl Fall 2026 on Sunday, October 18, 2026 at 1:00 p.m., and the Olive Branch Bonspiel on Saturday, November 21, 2026 at 7:00 a.m.
The campus-and-chateau day
Seneca Polytechnic's King Campus, 13990 Dufferin Street in King City -- a real post-secondary seat inside the township, on 282 hectares of woods, fields and lakeshore around Lake Seneca. Its buildings include Garriock Hall and Magna Hall (opened September 27, 2018), a residence of about 230 students, and Eaton Hall, the 1939 Norman-style chateau built for Lady Flora Eaton, which served as a naval convalescent hospital in the Second World War before the college bought the estate. Seneca's own Open House page dates its fall edition at King Campus for Saturday, November 21, 2026, 9 a.m. to noon. The University of Toronto's Koffler Scientific Reserve is also seated in King -- a research station, recorded as such, not a public campus. The campus grounds are the walk; the chateau is viewed as the landmark it is, at the access the college's own surfaces allow.
The fair weekend (spring, past edition as the shape)
the Schomberg Fair, run by the Schomberg Agricultural Society at the fairgrounds in the heart of downtown Schomberg, beside the river on Main Street -- the largest event in King Township on the society's own description, and a spring fair, not a fall one. Its 2026 edition, the 176th, ran Friday, May 29 to Sunday, May 31, 2026: gates opened at 5 p.m. Friday ahead of the demolition derby, the fair's most popular event; Saturday carried the grand parade on Main Street, the midway, homecraft hall and livestock shows. The edition's theme, as the society's own About and fair-dates pages and the Township's council summary carry it, was "Hay Bales & Cow Tails." Two conflicts ride the record flagged, never merged: a second theme line circulates on one society page, and the society's surfaces carry two differing admission grids -- so no admission figure prints in this guide; read gate prices on the society's own surface. The 2026 edition is past at this build -- no 2027 date is derived here; the society publishes its own fair book and dates each winter.
Building the days honestly
Three disciplines run through every plan. Dates: only operator-published dates print -- the fall art show, the curling slate, the Seneca Open House on Saturday, November 21, 2026 and the guided hikes are dated because their own surfaces date them; the fair and the craft-beer festival in Memorial Park print as past-edition shapes, never as next year's promise. Seats: a plan that hops to Vaughan or Toronto for dinner says so, in those cities' names. And meals: One discipline note, printed so it is never blurred: this township's community-meal record is at an interim stage, and this guide asserts NO meal verdict anywhere -- no food-bank programme, parish supper or club dinner is presented here as a listing. The King Township Food Bank is distribution, not a meal, and it is named in this guide only in that form.
Common questions
What is the best weekend to visit King Township?
For dated programming, mid-October to late November 2026 is unusually rich: the Arts Society King Fall Art Show (October 13-November 13), guided fall hikes, curling at the Trisan Centre, the Seneca Open House and two holiday markets on November 21-22. For the township's biggest single event, the Schomberg Fair runs in late May -- its 2026 edition was May 29-31, past at this build.
Can I do King Township without a car?
Partly. King City village works around the GO station, the Heritage & Cultural Centre and the library. Schomberg, Nobleton, Cold Creek and the farm gates are driving country -- the township is large and its villages are kilometres apart.
