Day trips

Day trips from Clearview, in brief: north to the bay, south-east to the city

The short version of the township's fan: two shore towns and a resort village within a short drive, a regional city for the full-service day, and a village loop that never leaves the township. The full version, with every distance computed, is on the day-trips-from page.

The fan out of town, and back

This guide page is the summary; the working list -- every direction carded, every distance computed from the Administration Centre in Stayner -- lives on the day-trips-from page. Attribution is by seat, never by closeness: Collingwood to the north-west, Wasaga Beach to the north-east, The Blue Mountains to the west, and Springwater, Essa, Mulmur and Grey Highlands around the other borders are separate municipalities. Their beaches, ski hills, arenas and main streets are theirs, named as destinations when they appear, never absorbed. Two landscapes inside this township belong to bigger bodies and are credited to them every time: Devil's Glen is an Ontario Parks provincial park, and the Nottawasaga Bluffs are a Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority property. Simcoe County, seated in Midhurst, is the upper tier; its tourism and transit services are county services, credited to the County.

The distances in this guide are computed, not estimated: the origin is the Administration Centre, 217 Gideon Street, Stayner (44.418628, -80.088323 -- the registry point settled in the township's identity record); each destination is taken at its published central point; the straight-line distance is the great-circle (haversine) distance, the road estimate multiplies it by 1.35, and the driving time divides it by a 62 km/h average, rounded to five minutes. These are honest planning orders of magnitude -- the day's route itself is read on the road and on Ontario 511.

The fan, in three directions

The shore pair

Collingwood + Wasaga Beach

Collingwood is of 14 km straight-line (computed), about 18 km by road and 20 minutes' estimated driving; Wasaga Beach is of 13 km straight-line (computed), about 17 km by road and 15 minutes' estimated driving. Harbour town one way, beach town the other -- both a half day, both their own municipalities.

The mountain + the city

Blue Mountain + Barrie

Blue Mountain Village is of 20 km straight-line (computed), about 27 km by road and 25 minutes' estimated driving for the resort day; Barrie is of 32 km straight-line (computed), about 43 km by road and 40 minutes' estimated driving for the city day and the Highway 400 gateway.

The home loop

Creemore + the escarpment

Creemore is of 10 km straight-line (computed), about 14 km by road and 15 minutes' estimated driving -- its own town, inside the loop. And the Bluffs and the Glen are home walks, not trips: the Bluffs are of 17 km straight-line (computed), about 23 km by road and 20 minutes' estimated driving.

How to choose

Pick by the day's appetite: water (Wasaga or Collingwood), vertical (Blue Mountain in season, Highlands Nordic at home in winter), services and cinema (Barrie), village (Creemore), or wild (the escarpment, without leaving home). Whatever the direction, the return discipline on the day-trips-from page applies: last entries read before departure, and the dark country drive home planned, not improvised.

What stays home

A day-trip fan is only honest if the home township keeps its own list: Stayner's campus, the halls, the fair, the markets and the escarpment are Clearview's own, printed on this guide's own pages -- and nothing in the fan is needed to fill a Clearview day. The trips out are additions, not substitutes, and the guide keeps the two lists separate on purpose.

Common questions

Where is the full day-trip list?

On this guide's day-trips-from page: every direction carded with distances computed from the Administration Centre at 217 Gideon Street, Stayner (straight-line by haversine, road at 1.35 times straight-line, time at 62 km/h), plus the return discipline.

What is the single best day trip from Clearview?

Collingwood for most visitors -- the closest complete harbour town. Beach travellers will argue for Wasaga, ski travellers for Blue Mountain, and the guide prints each case with its true length on the day-trips-from page.

Are day-trip destinations part of Clearview?

No -- Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, The Blue Mountains and Barrie are their own municipalities. Creemore is the exception that proves the rule: inside this township, and still its own town, with its own guide.
