Winter
Winter in Clearview: a carnival village, a ski hill without the lineup, and hockey in Stayner
Winter here is not a closed season -- it is Winterama season, ski-trail season and hockey season, on escarpment country where Georgian Bay weather is a planning fact. Here is the winter at its true size.
The cold season at full size
Sunnidale Winterama, in New Lowell, is the winter counterweight: the township's longest-running festival, running since the mid-1970s on the township's account, with the 51st edition held February 6 to 8, 2026 -- fireworks at New Lowell Recreation Park on the Friday, a Saturday parade through the village streets, and a two-dollar collector button as the price of the weekend, on the township's Discover Clearview surfaces at discoverclearview.ca.
The township's second winter engine is vertical in the gentle way: Highlands Nordic, at Duntroon on the escarpment brow, runs one of Ontario's established cross-country ski operations on the township's high ground -- groomed trails, rentals and lessons on the operator's own surfaces, read there for the day's conditions. The third engine is indoor and loud: the Stayner Siskins at the Regina Street arena, with Clearview Minor Hockey's Canucks filling the same ice all week.
The winter forms, carded
The carnival
Early February: fireworks, a parade, outdoor games and a two-dollar button. The township's longest-running festival is a winter one, and New Lowell is its village.
The trails
Groomed cross-country trails on the escarpment brow at Duntroon, with rentals and lessons on the operator's surfaces. The brow is the township's snow belt -- it holds snow the valley loses.
The game
Junior hockey at the Stayner Community Centre & Arena is the township's standing winter evening: a full local rink, the Canucks' minor-hockey week around it, and the library on the same campus for the quiet version.
The escarpment in snow, stated plainly
the escarpment in brief: Devil's Glen Provincial Park (Ontario Parks) for the Mad River valley and Bruce Trail; Nottawasaga Bluffs (NVCA) for crevice caves, the Keyhole Trail and 400 acres of brow forest; the Nottawasaga Lookout for the view. In winter both walks become snowshoe and winter-hiking country on their operators' terms -- crevice caves and escarpment edges are no place for improvisation in ice, and trail conditions live with Ontario Parks and the NVCA, never guessed here. The Bruce Trail's winter beauty is real; so is its exposure.
What winter here is not
There is no downhill ski hill seated in Clearview, and none is claimed: Blue Mountain's slopes are The Blue Mountains', reached as a day trip on this guide's day-trips pages. The township's winter is cross-country, carnival and hockey -- smaller, cheaper and entirely its own.
