Solo travel

Solo in Clearview: a township that rewards the unhurried

Clearview suits the solo traveller who likes a landscape more than an itinerary: big walks, small halls, friendly counters and no queue for anything. Here is the township, one person at a time.

One traveller, eleven communities

Clearview is a township in Simcoe County, Ontario, under the Niagara Escarpment south of Nottawasaga Bay: 556 square kilometres of farmland, river valleys and escarpment country holding eleven communities -- Stayner, the municipal seat; Creemore; New Lowell; Avening; Dunedin; Glen Huron; Singhampton; Duntroon; Nottawa; Brentwood and Cashtown Corners. The township office is the Administration Centre at 217 Gideon Street in Stayner (705-428-6230). The timezone is Eastern (America/Toronto). A Clearview trip is never one main street: it is a loop between communities, each a short country drive from the next.

The solo kit is simple here because the township is simple to read: base in Stayner, walk the escarpment by day, take the evening's event -- a game, a concert, a market -- as it comes. The country drives between communities are short, signed and, in daylight, easy; after dark they are deer country, planned accordingly.

The solo walk

Bluffs + Glen, your pace

the escarpment in brief: Devil's Glen Provincial Park (Ontario Parks) for the Mad River valley and Bruce Trail; Nottawasaga Bluffs (NVCA) for crevice caves, the Keyhole Trail and 400 acres of brow forest; the Nottawasaga Lookout for the view. Midweek, both walks are quiet enough to hear the valley.

A hall concert for one

Small Halls nights seat singles without ceremony -- a chair is a chair in Avening or Dunedin, and the room is glad you came. September 18 to November 7 in 2026.

The solo base

Stayner's campus

Arena, library, Station Park and Main Street within a short walk: the practical, friendly base for a car-free-ish day in the seat.

Safety, printed plainly

Escarpment trails are rugged and phone signal thins in the valley: leave the day's walk with someone, carry the operator's trail map, and treat crevice country with the respect the NVCA's notes ask. Country roads after dark are unlit; the solo evening ends with the event, not after it.

The Creemore half-day, cross-linked

One community needs its boundary stated once, plainly: Creemore, in the township's south-east, is also a Dayfari town in its own right, with its own guide, its own market, brewery and festival records. This guide cross-links to Creemore's own pages where a Clearview loop naturally passes through the village -- and never re-prints Creemore's records as Clearview's. The village is a stop on the loop; its story lives on Creemore's own pages. Solo, the village is an easy half-day inside the loop -- its own guide carries the details.

Common questions

Is Clearview good for solo travel?

For the walking-and-quiet kind, yes: escarpment trails, small halls, a friendly seat town and festival evenings that welcome singles. It is a car-based township -- the solo traveller without one bases in Stayner and walks.

What is the best solo evening in Clearview?

A Small Halls concert in autumn, or a Siskins game at the Stayner arena in winter -- both are rooms where one more person is simply audience.

Are the escarpment trails safe alone?

They are established Bruce Trail and park trails, rugged in places. Carry the map, tell someone the plan, mind the crevice terrain at the Bluffs, and read the operators' conditions first.
